Default Hand Testing a Transmission?

Hey gang,

I'm looking to pick-up a tranny and differential tomorrow, but wanted to give it a quick test before I pay the guy. The transmission and differential are currently bolted together, but no torque tube or shift linkage is provided, just the input shaft and the little shift bar that stick out of the front of the transmission. My question is, how should I manipulate the shift bar to select different gears? I would like to run it through all 7 gears to make sure they actually engage and drive the differential outputs. Can anyone help me here?

Thanks.

BOY!! Your in a tough spot! With out a load on the drive train, unless the synchros and gears are completly FUBAR; it going to shift. If it doesnt, its really shot!

Just snap a pair of vise grips on the shift shaft. To shift gears you have to ROTATE the slector shaft left or right and pull the shaft out or push it in The CENTER position pulled out of pushed in is 3rd / 4th.

You will need to have some one rotate the input shaft while you run it thru the gears. It will be tough to do it by yourself. Another pair of vise grips (with a cushion between the shaft and plyers!)

Ya, I don't expect it to be a full-proof test, but if bits of gears are shredded or something is horribly wrong, I should find out. The setup won't be going into a vehicle for at least a year, so I'd like to know that it should be drivable (at least, somewhat) once it's built. Thanks for the information, I hope I'm able to turn everything.
