Hey folks. I recently posted about a problem I was having regarding pinging/KR. It isn't that bad but I wanted to see what was up with it and how I could possibly fix it.
Somone posted about there being a new PCM update for '02's (or for every C5?) that attempts to "fix" the pinging problem but as a result, performance is hurt a little (more so for A4's than MN6's). Anyone know anything more about this? I am taking the car into the dealer for some service work and am unsure about whether or not I should have them update my PCM. Thoughts? :)
I had this done on my 2002 coupe a couple of months ago for the same problem, as did a couple of other members. The update retards the timing some which is where the claim of slightly reduced power arises. I couldn't tell the difference on my MN6 in terms of drivability. Plus, I'm still getting a bit of pinging. I'm looking at other reasons for this.
I would go ahead and have the update done since there are other changes included, although I don't remember exactly what they entailed.
Be aware that you can't go back to the previous programming once you have this done.
I'm looking at h/c in the near future so dyno tuning is on the list to revamp my PCM.
Why? Companies like Fastchips, TTS, etc. typically adjust the timing up & down to maximize performance.
You're right. What I was saying was that the service tech told me was that they (the dealer service techs) cannot flash the PCM back to the previous version if you don't like the effects of the new version.
Other members who've had this done were told the same thing. :yesnod:
Is this a common problem for 02? I have noticed some pretty bad pinging under WOT, but it seems to go away when the outside air temp and humidity drop. I did an autotap and saw a max KR of about 1.3.
