Default Wheels & Offsets, How Confusing!!

Wow I never would have thought that buying new wheels would be so challenging. I am looking to buy new wheels for my 2000 C5. Currently stock wheels. Frt 17x8.5 and rr 18x9.5 verified by checking the inside of the wheel.
My BIG question is what is the offset of these. I've talked with 2 wheel dealer that have told me the offset on the rears are 57mm and their wheels are an exact fit. Another one did recommend that I look on the inside of the wheel. I just did and after the 18X9.5 is has J65. There are no other numbers that look like the offset number. I even read under one of sticky's topics that it is 65mm. I'm assuming since it is stamped like that, that it is.
SO... if it is 65mm and I get wheels that are 57mm the wheels will sit further in the wheel well on the rear, right? (by a little over 1/4") OR do I have this backwards the wheels will extend further out?
As I think about it, is it really anything to worry about? Even noticable?

Why don't you just measure the offset?

I did attempt to do that but with the wheel on it's difficult.

Hey 8Vette&, The lightbulb just came on. Got it! The full grasp how. I was on to it with figuring out the difference. I had also played around with the "Wheel Offset Calculator" at 1010Tires. I did the level with the finder thing again and on the rear it is 13/16". So with the 8mm difference the wheel will be about 9/16" which is still good. YES!
Thanks a bunch.

The following is from TSW's site. They stress the importance of getting the offset correct and explain why.
