I know there are many of you running your stock and slightly modifed Z's at the 1/4 mile track. For fairly decent 1/4 mile times, What is the general consensus shift RPM that is typically safe for an LS6 stock engine? Also, what is the Rev Limit value and can the LS6 be damaged by hitting the rev limit???
I don't know if you'll find a consensus on a 'safe' shift point. I have mine set at 6700 & I bounce off it once in a while. Hitting the rev limiter doesn't do any damage. If it did, my stroker LS would be at the junk yard right now.
Rev limiter/Fuel cut off is at 6600 rpm to prevent damage.. On stock or slightly modded engines there is no sense on going beyond the manufactures recommended 6500rpm redline.. You will just find yourself bouncing of the rev limiter which will hurt you quarter mile times. Max power is 405@6000 rpms.. And yes the Ls6 pulls hard all the way to the red line, Best thing you can do at the track is work on your launch technique and 60 foot times.. It takes practice to dial in a good time with these beasts on street tires
Thanks guys for the info. It sounds to me like the LS6 has no problem in the higher RPM Ranges. If the stock Rev Limit is set @ 6600, I think NastyZ is giving good advice for 6400 to have fun without too many worries.
Anyone running shift lights? Who makes a quality light that doesnt make the inside of your Vette look funky? Pics would be appreciated. Thanks

Actually it is set at 6500 from the factory. Drag racers probably don't hit it that often since they only shift 3 times in a quarter mile which they don't do all that often in one day. Track guys will hit it much more often as they are shifting up and down many times per lap for half hour or longer periods at least 4 times per day and usually two days at a time. Most of the guys doing that including me never had an issue with the engine. I put 5000 track miles on my C5Z without ever doing anything to the engine except changing the oil/filter and the coolant. They can take a licking and keep on ticking.
