Default DIY: Coilover Install

Hey guys after searching for a while I couldn't find a thread with working pictures and a good write up on how to do a complete coilover install. So I thought what better way to really start my membership on here, by helping future coilovers owners out.

*disclamer* I'm not responsable for your install, this is merly a thread to show you what I did*

I'm installing Pfadt coilover they came boxed nicely, it also came with coilover wrenchs and few other things.
boxing:

out of box:

and the other pieces that come with it

First things first, I live in NY and during the winter months they love to dump salt, and most of that salt stays around till April. So I prep my coils before I install them just to make sure they stay in good condition for awhile:

Prep-
Step 1: Get your self a can of spray grease and a can of Anti-seize.

Step 2: Remove the lower mounting cup and locking ring.

Step 3: Using the anti-seize and apply a thin even coat over the threads

Step 4: Screw locking ring on and all the way up till it touches the spring's locking ring. This will make sure the anti-seize gets in all the grooves.

Step 5: Screw the Lower mounting cup back on and go all the way till it bottoms out. This will get anti-seize on all the threads inside there and protect them as well.

Step 6: Now go ahead and lower the locking ring down.

Step 7: Since Pfadt set the pre-tension on the spring already I couldn't apply the anti-seize in those threads so I took spray grease and gave those threads a quick spray

Step 8: After that just whip any grease and anti-seize off the coilover

Repeat 2-8 on the other 3 coilovers

All 4 done and ready to go in.

Will be updating as I go along it will take a few days to get everything done as im detailing the underside as well

Good luck with the install. I have to disagree with all the stuff you are putting on the shock threads. Once you have them installed the adjustments in the future should be minimal and even tho you wipe the stuff off you will not get it out of the thread grooves. The dust and dirt will stick in the grooves, making it harder to adjust them in the future, if needed.

The first few coilover installs I did, I never put anything in there and after a year or so they were all was locked up. And took a lot of cleaning and hammering to free them up. I since coated them with the anti-seize and since then have never had an issue. I would always suggest it if you live up north and drive your car year round. It's not so much the dust and dirt that will bind them but more like corrosion and salt

To each there own... I have always loved the look of lower car and I know I can't get the height I'm looking for with just the bolts. Maybe you just bought blown coils? Did you change the Damping? I'm sorry you feel there a waste of time and money, But I didn't make this thread to argue if you like coils or not, (you did that already). Just a thread to help with people who are installing them.

I have had the coil overs on for a period of time and there is hardly a dustier place in the summer than here in Az. Mine are dirt free because I never put grease or anything else on the threads. As I stated before you can not clean the grooves by wiping them off and the dust will stick in them because of the compounds you put in there.
The whole issue is moot because they should never have to be adjusted after they are set.

You live in a dusty place, there for your worried about dust. I live in a place that is very corrosive place, there for I'm worried about protecting the coils. I don't live in a dusty place. This isn't my first time using coilovers, I've had them on my last 5 cars. I never had an issue with dust sticking to the threads cause, well its not dusty here. I have had issue with the rings being stuck on. I also change my wheels a lot, so if I have to adjust the height I rather not have to go through the hassle of taking them off and cleaning them and hammering away to loosen the rings. Thanks for your concern though, if I move to AZ I'll be sure to not but anti-sieze in the threads.

Nice write up! Let us know how the rest of the install goes, should be pretty straightforward from here. The Antisieze isn't a bad idea for salty climates, it's pretty amazing what a few years of driving in the snow and salt can do to a set of coilovers.
