I'm having really hard time shifting gear OUT OF reverse (and into
reverse too). It does not help, even if I put it into a forward gear first
before going into reverse. Beside going into and out of reverse, all other six forward gears are perfect. Does this sound like a bad synchro?
Have you done any hard shifting? It could very well be a bad syncro. If you have it replaced, upgrade your blocker rings to the '01 ceramic versions and get the aftermarket shift fork that C5Cemo has. Might as well beef it up if you have to go in there ;)
Since it's reverse only, I'd check the reverse lock out solenoid's operation. A fluid change is a good idea as well...can't hurt.
If all gears were hard to shift I would suspect the clutch...
Here's a link to a service fle for the T-56. This will help you determine what's wrong. I think it's the reverse lockout as stated in this service literature.
If you have the Cartek clutch, make sure it's adjusted properly. Its very easy to have it misadjusted. 1st and reverse require the most release of the clutch. That clutch should start engaging approx. 2-3" off the floor.
I would try that first before you yank the tranny!
I know exactly what you're experiencing and I've meet other people who've had problems with reverse also. My 2001 would pop out of reverse occasionally and would usually fight me putting it into reverse. I've always babied my car but the problem kept getting worse and I ended up taking it into the dealer. They found the reverse gear was chewed up and they ended up replacing the gear, fork, cylinder and syncro. The car has been great ever since and the forward gears even shift better! This job isn't for the faint of heart since they dropped most of the rear end to get into the tranny and it cost $915 which was covered under warranty. Good luck!
Any idea on how much it would cost (labor & parts)?
Thanks

I just had the 5th gear synchro replaced by the dealer. Parts were $1,400 and labor was about $1,400. But Carmax paid for it, so I didn't get too upset.
Sounds like reverse gear and synchro need to be replaced.I have done a few :yesnod: The good news is that the trans does not have to come out to replace it (tip of the day ;) )...
I got to take off the nitrous first and put the stock shifter back on before taking it into the dealer. Hopefully they won't blame it on the rest of my mods (Cartek clutch, T1 cam, and TPIS headers).
Wish me luck.
Oh, may be I should have them put in the 4.10 while at it.
