My opinion is that the dealer should cover the cost of diagnosing the problem and only charge you for the labor and parts involving replacing a clutch due to loss of friction material. If you can drive the car without the clutch slipping, then I wouldn't suspect the friction plate as being the problem and you're going to lose the cost of diagnosing the problem.
Personally, I have 30k on my clutch and it's been to the track a few times. I removed the inspection plate (8 bolts) from the bellhousing and measured just under 1/4" of friction material. My 97 is in the shop right now for hard shifting when it is up to operating temperature. I have GMPP Major Guard and they didn't even talk about a possible clutch issue, even though, in my mind, the clutch is not releasing all the way.
I'd call another GM dealer and explain your problem, and post the reply here. I had to talk to a Ford dealer regarding Ford Truck under warranty who was 30 minutes away but it was worth it.
ok.. got a response from the dealer today and I feel like I'm getting the ripped here.. what do you think???
Rick from Gordon Chevy called me back and said that it looks like a clutch issue, and that they can't verify it 100% until I authorize them for the labor (680$).... and if it is the clutch it would be $1300 for all the repairs (assuming that they have to replace the clutch and that would not be covered under warranty).
NOW if this was 300$ I would have had no prob agreeing off the bet.. but that seems kinda high to me.. and afterall aren't they supposed to open it up and diagnose it at no charge.. it is under warranty afterall.
Any advice anyone???
dealer told me same thing when i had clutch problems - $$$ to diagnose the problem. i called b.s. and went someplace else for a free diagnosis. discovered that it was indeed the clutch, and then went to the dealer and got a 2002 z06 clutch installed (parts and labor) for $1300.
i think it's b.s. that you have to pay for the diagnosis. i would argue that with the dealer - get the shop manager involved - and hope that they are reasonable. i.e. if it is the clutch, then you'll pay to have them replace it. if it is not the clutch, then they think about doing a better job of diagnosing problems and eat the labor costs.
If the problem here were a worn clutch, wouldn't the grinding occur when the pedal was depressed and you attempt to shift into gear, rather than upon release. Now it isn't a case of a worn clutch, but rather a malfunctioning component wouldn't it be covered under warranty, or is anything to do with the clutch non warranty.
Dont know... but i press the clutch in... everything is normal.... put in neutal ..no noise...press clutch in ...put in ANY other gear.. let clutch go.. noise happens.
Had the dealer take it apart and looks like the middle round piece of the clutch is busted.. looks to me like a factory malfunction...but I will deal with it later. Dealer says they have never seen this before but at any rate I need to replace it.
The Z06 clutch kit (disk/plate and flywheel) is 475$ plus 117$ for the bearing and for the regular stock they quoted me 458$ for flywheel and disk then 255$ for the plate and 116$ bearing. I was expecting to see the Z06 kit more expensive then the normal stock one, but looks like its the other way around.
Will the Z06 kit work in my 2000 conv.?? Does anyone know???
What other options do I have??? For those of you that had it replaced what would you do if you had to replace it again????
ICULUKN-C5....where did you get the STAR SPEC stage III that you refered me to??

Re: Clutch busted???? HELP !!!! (coolC5)
Yes the ZO6 clutch set up will work in your vehicle and I would definitely recommend it. Go with the '02 unit. Also replace your slave cylinder while you're there. The labor to replace it alone is the same as the labor to replace just the throwout bearing. Do it now and save and worries later. If the dealer won't cover the slave, then I would recommend you pony up the bucks yourself. I got the the complete ZO6 setup now,but it was the original slave that went out in the first place that caused me to have to replace anything. BTW, you'll like the ZO6 clutch. Less pedal pressure. Very smooth. :D
