I've installed the drivetrain back parts a few times and the first time the input shaft just wouldn't go into the pilot bearing while everything was together. I tried all different angles and it should have gone but it was being stubborn. So, I just put the TT in by itself and it slipped in place with almost no effort. It's so easy because you just push the front into place and then do circles with the back while pushing.

The last time, I installed the TT and the tunnel plate and then let the tunnel plate hold-up the back of the TT while installing the transmission and differential. The trans is easy to push into place under the car and the trans bolts are easy to get to while under the car. A long extension and flex joint lets you reach around the diff and trans to the bolts with lots of room to spare.

If it's all apart you have to bolt it together at some point, so it's really not much more work bolting it together under the car instead of on the floor. I usually do this stuff myself and the whole assembly is a fair bit of weight to balance on a floor jack and it's awkward to move around as well. The trans and diff sit decently on my floor jack and I can then move it around wherever I need it and steer it around the jack stands holding the car up. That would not be possible with the torque tube hanging off the front of the trans and I'd have to drag it under the car before putting it on the jack.

Great info, thanks! Especially the idea of installing the tunnel plate to hold the TT...

I ended up installing it the regular way. It took a while, but I think it would have been about the same difficulty given the clearance above the transmission to get it bolted up to the torque tube.

Thanks for the replies!

I would fear some difficulty reconnecting the shifter linkage, (roll pin etc) close to the bottom of the car, but otherwise i dont see any difference, just personal preference.
