I now check mine cold before I start the motor. You get basically one attempt at checking, because once you put it back in and pull again it smears all over the dipstick and you can't read it.
I put in 6.5 when I changed mine and found it was a 1/2 quart low. I also raised the rear of the car when I changed it. I put in the extra 1/2 quart so it now reads exactly on the full line when cold.
Not being very bright myself, I simply collected all of the tips about checking oil level on the '01-02 cars that others have posted, and put them in a Tech Tip. Check that section for further details. It all sounds complicated, but it's a very easy routine when you get used to it.
6.5 is the correct amount to add when changing oil/filter. The way the dipstick
reads is 1/2 qt. low (right between the top and bottom holes), but it is actually full. If you add 7 qts you will read full on the distick, but you will be a 1/2 qt. overfilled. This will not hurt anything.
Be careful about using the Camaro dipstick...it's possible that the oil pan in the Vette and the Camaro are not alike.
Also, note that the dipstick and dipstick tube were re-designed for the '01 (and now the '02) models. Open the hood on any pre-'01 C5 model and you'll see that their dipstick is located about 6 inches closer to the firewall.
