Default o2 sensor question

Hi,
I recently picked up a 2001 z06 and I'm currently installing a set of headers. It already has a set of longtube headers now but the system is leaky and beat up so I decided to change it. My concern is with the o2 sensors. I took out the sensors and one of them has two wires cut off from it, the green wire and the purple wire. I didn't have any codes or anything on the dash. The other sensor seems fine. Is this some sort of setup to make it run a certain way? Why would the green and purple wires be cut from the harness?
Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,
Adham

If the sensor in question is a rear sensor, maybe the previous owner had them tuned out.

If your sensor wires are cut and no codes are present they have been tuned out...

The car is tuned since it is cammed but there are only 2 o2 sensors on the car. These are the front sensors. Sorry for not clarifying which ones they were.

I am really surprised that you don't have several engine codes due to this. I cannot think that there is any logical reason for those wires to be cut.

Maybe I ripped them out when I dropped the headers??
So I should definitely reattach them right?

If you damaged the O2 Sensor wiring or its damaged,,, its best to just replace it with a new sensor. The sensor wiring is "SUPPOSE" to be constructed to allow fresh air into the sensor for reference air.

I dont see how that's possible but,,, all the data that I have read on O2 sensor construction/operation, support that theory and state NOT to cut/splice or repair the sensor wiring.

Take that for what its worth.

If your NOT seeing primary O2 sensor DTC's with the wires broken, it may just be the heater wiring and the O2 sensor signal output is satifying the PCM under the conditions that your driving in.

Sooner or later,,, you will see O2 sensor DTCs. If that DTC reporting data is TUNED OUT by the tune,,,, I strongly recommend getting it TUNED BACK ON.

Agree with Bill-- PLUS it All depends on HOW the tuner tuned your car---and what the HP is--Some tuners will run a "SPEED DENSITY " tune--with a SD tune the 02's are NOT used-- May be why the wires are clipped--If you are in the 400-425 RWHP range I see no reason to run a SD tune--Also with a SDtune the MAF is NOT used--For a daily driver type car you'd be better off with a MAF and 02 tune--You can get horrendous idle issues and horrible milage with a SD tune if it's not done correctly-- and every time you travel and go up in altitude or to sea level the tune can be way OFF
Best way to tell is to take it to a local tuner with a data logger and have him see what you got--Also you can check the 02's with any scanner or code reader that has real time data---See if your 02's are flatlined at .450 millivolts or if they are oscilatting quickly between .100 and .950 millivolts
If they are flatlined then you most likely have a SD tune--
start there and report back-

Where are you located? You might have a well known C5 tuner near you...

Well I went back under the car to further investigate the issue,
I came to unplug the sensor from the wiring harness but it turns out to be that it isnt connected or anything! The end wires are all cut and tucked behind the heat shield. Again, this is the front passenger o2 sensor. The other sensor looks great and its plugged in and everything. So is this a wideband setup or something? I'm not too familiar with o2 setups. I also see o2 simulators plugged in.

btw, I'm located in Hampton Roads, VA

Really WEIRD that you don't have any codes... If you end up needing a tuner to look at it (which I'd suggest) you're lucky... you're VERY close to these guys: https://virginiaspeed.com/Home_Page.html

I've heard/read really good things about them.

Thanks, I definitely plan on checking them out.

But as of now, I have no idea what's going on. How is it possible to only run one o2 sensor and not get any codes?

So it turns out the wiring harness where the sensor connects to is completely MELTED!!!!
No wonder why the sensor isn't plugged in lol....seems like this is gonna be a huge headache....
