I am looking seriously at a 1998 C5. It is perfect except for the brake control module which controls the ABS and the traction control. I am no mechanic. I am told by the dealer that the part is no longer made and that IF it's able to be rebuilt, it is only about a 40% success rate. Here's my question, what do the owners of these cars do? There must be an answer somewhere, is there someone making these parts aftermarket? I just can't believe that there is no answer or help for this situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I just bought a 1998 with 15,000 miles on it and ran the codes and this car has not had that issue yet, I also would like to know the answer to this question and if all of the C5 corvettes have this problem.
I am now experiencing the same issue on my '98. I can't believe that GM is just ignoring this and telling us that they have no responsibility to fix this. I hope that someone can help us out. I can drive without anti-lock brakes and traction control but I would prefer not to.
I often wonder how many of these ABS failures are mis-diagnosed as a module problem when the problem is really just a low battery. I struggled with this error message on start up for a few years on my '00 trying everything - from locking the brakes on dirt roads (to activate the ABS), to taking the module apart and re-soldering the terminals, to implementing all of Bill Curlee's electrical fixes (thanks Bill).
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut on occasion. In my case, I was about to add a big ground wire between the battey and the Starter/Chassis/Alternator and I found a loose nut on the starter. Fixing that, and a good battery charge, and my ABS error message went away. Every so often I get the error message again (after the car sits for a while) so I charge the battery, and the problem is solved.
