Default Service Steering Column

OK, well all was fine backed the car out to wash then after started to put it in the garage and I'm getting this message.

Service Steering Column

I know there were some recalls due to this area so called dealer with my VIN from a 2004 Z06 and they said no outstanding recalls or TSB.

So I pulled the codes tonight and I get only these two

U1064H
C1278H

Seems that this is related to the active handling/BCM/other? I'm not sure where to go from here? I didn't want to drive it as I've heard of the column lock that will leave you stranded and have to tow the vehicle but not sure that is what I'm looking at here?

Any advice would be appreciated.

MOST likely cause of the column lock symptoms is a bad or weak battery or loose or corroded battery cables. To check the state of health of your battery you CANNOT use the readings from the dash guages. With engine running you read the output voltage of the alternator. Nice the alternator is trying to charge the battery but it's too late as the column lock electronics rune BEFORE the engine is started. With Key on and engine off there are many electrical cisruits loading the battery so the reading means nothing with respect to battery health.

To check you battery for the minimum voltage required to operate the column lock electronics, disconnect the neg battery cable and measure the voltage across the battery posts with a Digital Multi Meter.

Column lock electronics require greater than 12.5 volt to function properly. Car will start with as little as 12.2 volts. So if the battery is low and you start the car you are guaranteed of experiencing the column lock symptoms. This time of year heat is killing batterys. Try charging yours. A fully charged good battery will measure 12.7 to 12.9 volts or greater measured with no load . If you cannot charge the battery to 12.7 volts it is on its way out.
Great information, I'll check out the battery voltage first.

OK, well got a chance to look at this and the number I've got is 12.39 volts! definitely below the 12.5 but not by much.

I'm co0l to put a battery in the car give it i the original but I'd like to make sure. I'm thinking if I throw my trickle charger on it for a day and if the voltage comes up then I can retest and see if it passes this check.
