If you are sure its not a mildew type smell and it really is exhaust, I would be quickly looking at the exhaust manifold to pipe clamps to insure they are tight and no leaks there. Exhaust fumes from there, can be drawn up into the fresh air inlet.
Are you in normal mode?If so, you are drawing air in from outside the cabin.Maybe you have an oil leak that could be smelling,or you are simply smelling other cars exhausts. If you are smelling it in recirc,it probably is not exhaust fumes you smell.
If it was not sealed up well, that is most likely where the engine bay fumes are being introduced into the cabin.....as that is the fresh air intake with a hole in it.

Good catch and drag....
For me... a beer and Burrito lunch and the AC on recirculate can case my exhaust fumes to get recirculated. Sorry
