Default MORE Problems! WTF!

Rear quarter panel is cracked. How, I dont know. Dont believe I was hit, cant see any evidence of a collision or someones shoe print indicating it may have been kicked. How can a quarter panel just crack? It's literally split from just in front of the rear marker to almost the top of the panel. Just about right in half. WTF!

Having some real bad luck with the car today

**edit**

I just remembered, I had an alignment done last week, the shop apparently "shifted" the cradle a bit to help with the alignment they said but told me it didnt help. Could that have maybe put some stress on the panel?

You must have some issues with the frame as that is no way to fix an alignment issue. I think you would have to auger the cradle holes to move any real amount?

Mounting stresses on body panels can cause stress fractures to happen.

Not fixed correctly from the wreck

I had the car checked out afterwards and the frame is totally fine. The shop I was at thinks maybe one of the control arms maybe bent or out of whack as the rear tire on that side of that car sits about 3/8 of an inch fwd but it didnt prevent the shop from aligning it properly. The reason they tried to shift the cradle was to see if it moved the wheel back a bit, it didnt but now I'm wondering if that cradle shift was the culprit of the cracked panel. Do you think thee guy may have shifted the cradle and didnt put it back to where it was and this may have stressed the panel? I found a used panel and am going to attempt a DIY but want to make sure I dont end up with the same fate twice here.

I don't know what they mean by "shifting the cradle" but it sure sounds like they could've screwed something up when they did that... Do you have a pic of the damage and of the frame underneath? Posting that might help...

Thinks? It is their BUSINESS to KNOW that kind of thing... And "shifting the cradle" is a pi$$ poor way of dealing with a bent control arm. If it's bent replace it. I would find another shop and get a second opinion about the frame.

Look in the regional forums for a recommendation on a good shop near you.

Default SMC is very forgiving

If I was going to bet, I would say you were hit.. possibly by a urethane rear or front bumper which would leave no mark but put enough stress on the 1/4 to crack it...SMC will crack if it take a square shot, but is very flexible..any out of alignment or body flex will not effect SMC. Jacking up a corner wont hurt.Even a run away shopping cart with rubber bumpers will crack a 1/4 it hit in the right place.. like anywhere around the wheel cut out.
