just picked up a c5 several weeks ago, noticed it was harder than normal to shift into first gear, and on occasion would pop out of reverse. as when i get any new car i did my own tuneup oil, plugs, trans fluid, diff fluid all yesterday morning. car drove/ shifted 38458x better after this. smooth shifting into first, reverse seemed to stay in gear. now this afternoon while out running errands i noticed a slight grinding noise coming threw the shift boot. the noise does not start when you engage/disengage the clutch, but when you engage the clutch and shift into first gear and then disengage the clutch to get moving. this being said, the car supposedly has a brand new twin disk clutch installed 2-3 months ago, but the clutch fluid is brown. at first i was leaning towards a bad throwout bearing but wouldnt that make noise once i engage the clutch? what could not be engaging/disengaging 100% to make the car have this grinding noise sitting still in gear, but once your moving it shifts threw all gears and drives 100% normal??
anybody have a similar issue? any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Man, I was having the SAME issue!!!!! We're actually pretty sure it IS the throwout bearing. Do me a favor, next time you drive the car, when it's in 1st and it starts making that noise, put it in neutral and then jam it really hard into first sitting still. If it goes into 1st ok and stops making the noise, let me know and we'll chat.
It sounds normal for a C5. The propshaft will have a rattle type noise during normal launch in first gear that will go away as rpm climbs.
its a pretty aggressive grinding nose something is definitely not engaging/disengaging the way its supposed too. i havent gotten back home to mess with it yet but has anyone had similar issues with throwout bearings or slave cylinders?
Well, let me know when you get a chance to get back in it. Does it sort of seem to want to lurch forward while in gear, sitting still and making the noise while giving it a little throttle?

Can you post a wav file of the noise? Does it make the noise anytime other than when you take off from a stop?
hey guys finally got a chance to grab a video. im leaning towards throwout bearing after taking a little more time to listen... let me know what you think! p.s. i appreciate all the help thus far.
That's the exact same symptoms and noise I had going on!!!! Throwout bearing all the way, man!! I have some contact info for a guy at Texas Speed that will sell you a brand new RAM slave cylinder and throwout bearing for $150. Since you're going to have to tear all the driveline out anyway just to get to the slave and TO bearing and bleed it, you may as well change both just for piece of mind and especially since just a TO bearing from the auto parts store is over $60, why the hell not.
150 shipped? definitely trying to get this knocked out soon. its been 3 days and im already having withdrawls from atleast having the option of driving the car on a nice day lol. now that were all pretty much on the same page about the diagnosis, is there a big gain in an upgraded throwout/slave cylinder like the ram? or is a new oem product just as good on a c5? keep in mind my car has a twin disk clutch..
Sorry for the delayed response, Marc!!! For whatever reason, the notification never made it to my inbox.
It's $162 shipped with 3 day UPS. The added advantage is just that it's made a little better than the original one, lasts longer and puts up with more abuse as well as being sealed better which will keep your clutch fluid clearer, longer. Especially with that twin disk in there.
Let me know if you have any questions I can help with.
