Default My steering column lock problem went away...has yours?

Before I put my car away for the winter I had the dreaded steering column lock problem (it was locked "unlocked" so I was able to still drive it) ,but when I took it out about 30 days ago I had to completely charge the battery for some reason and when it finally charged my steering column lock problem was gone. Go figure!

Never had the column lock problem (50000 miles) but I made it an habit to turn the ignition key to the ON position, wait 1~2 seconds and then start the car.
Personally I think that the column lock problem occurs to people who turn the key straight through and who have a weaker battery. The huge starting current makes the battery voltage drop to a level that it is no longer sufficient to unlock the column mechanism within the alotted time of the CPU.
But as I said, this is just my theory.

I bought my car several months ago and the previous owner had the GM fix put on the car in September of 2001. Two weeks ago I get the Service Column Lock message and the car goes into shut down mode. Ship it off to the dealership where it sits and they can't find the problem. They have been on the phone to GM and every thing they try or replace comes back with the same error message. Once they figure it out I will update. Sure glad it happened after I got home and not on the highway.

Untouchable00, do you have the aftermarket bypass or the GM fix? Mine has the GM fix and the problem is back with a bad attitude.

Mine also locked w/the error message. After doing some forum advised pulling yelling and screaming I got it to unlock. It made stange noises for about a week after then went away. This was about 6 months ago and has never come back.

Bluevette 2000,if you have an A4 have them install another relay harness that comes in the recall kit.I have had 2 that were defective, causing the same symptom after the recall was performend...2 out of 200 aint bad :)
