Default Heat and ETs

Does the heat affect an A4 or MN6 the most? At the track a couple of weeks ago, my ET fell off by .4 while friends with MN6 only lost .2

Is there a rule of thumb for horsepower/ET and temperature?

Heat causes the engine to produce less hp!

Thanks for the response, AL, I already knew the obvious. Just wanted to know of the effect on performance as it relates to temperature changes with each transmission.

I would reformulate your theory on a larger pool of tests, given that it seems you've drawn a conclusion based on two cars and two visits to the track. I would actually expect the opposite of what you observed, since traction seems to be a bigger issue with the MN6 than with the A4. I am willing to bet temperature has at least as big an effect on traction as it does on power.

Were your better times in hotter or colder weather, and what were the temps?

In 60 degree weather, I was running 12.5, the MN6 guys were running 12.2. In 85 degree weather, I was running 12.9, the MN6 guys were running 12.4

We all had on nitto drag radials.

I makes sense if you think about it. As the temps go up horsepower drops but traction increases. Hot tire and hot track surface makes for harder launches. A manual trans car can make better use of high traction conditions. On a sticky track, haw about a 5000 rpm clutch drop  An auto can only build to stall before launch. Also, a car with a cold air intake box, like vortex, will lose more HP with increasine temp, also. Giving up some of it's gains to an under the hood type system.

a hot track is not always a good thing; if you get too much heat, oils can rise to the surface causing less traction. Go to an NHRA event in a hot climate location and you'll see them occasionally scraping the first 60ft or so where the majority of the rubber is being laid. Too much heat and rubber will lead to spins out of the box.

As far as weather, it plays a HUGE roll in the cars overall ET and trap speed mph. In nice, dry, high baramoter, 55 degree weather, my Z06 was trapping 116+ with EASE. In muggy, low baram, 85 degree weather, my Z06 was struggling to trap 114. It plays a large role.

Here's a neat "density altitude" calculator that I try to keep track of. If it's a +900 foot day here in Houston, I'm probably looking at 114 traps. On the other hand, if it's a -900ft day (which are rare here, only in winter), then the 117 traps will be possible.

unfortunately, it's gonna be a long, hot summer before I see good conditions down here next fall

I just ran the density altitude numbers. When my time went down the density altitude was +2,130ft, on my best run the density altitude was -1,100ft. That and the traction issue of a warm track makes sense,

Thanks
