Default More steering column lock!

I did read the sticky on the subject before this post. If I missed the obvious I apologize in advance.

Here is the setup:

2002 M6 'vert. (I'm original owner). In '09 experienced the locked steering wheel; managed to get it free and drove to dealer. Dealer installed a new column lock (said motor was shorted) and Harness K (19244028). Car ran fine for last two years.

Car now starts and says "pull key and wait 10 secs" and "service steering column". Column does lock with key out and unlocks when car is running. Car cuts out if attempted to be driven.

Checked battery (good) and pulled fuses 23 and 25.

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you k-harness took a dump. You can either buy a new k-harness or a clb.

Slick Rick,

That's is what I suspect. Have to leave for a couple days, will order one upon return.

Thanks,

column lock bypass. comes with instructions that even show how to remove the K Harness and you never have to worry about it again. install it yourself for free, its EASY! you should change this anyways, but if this doesn't work then you need a new relay that is located behind the BCM. CLB is $50 (http://www.corvettesofhouston.com/index.php?cPath=29_42), the relay is around $25 (get this from the dealer, not auto part store). Don't get overcharged for something that is easy to do yourself. Good luck and ask anything you need, I did both on my car!

Ig you ever get the car tuned in the futur. You got the option in hptuner to cancel this system:

Colum lock delete:
System -> General - > Column Lock change to not fitted and change from 1.5 to 255

Any way to trouble shoot between the harness and the relay?

Probably could use a volt meter, but don't really know how. The biggest trouble for these problems would be fixed with the CLB however. I would start there. You could always get a relay from the dealer, replace and if it doesn't work, return it.

It was the harness K. Part # 19244027 on part, although the receipt says 19244028.

Removed it and the message instantly cleared.

Debating on another K or CLB.

Thanks to all for help.

If that cleared it then that was your problem, however the K harness may go bad again some day. I would say order the CLB and forget about it forever. But at least your driving for now!! Thanks for the update!

For simplicity I put another K harness it. The local Chevy dealer had one in stock.

Maybe I watched too much of "That 70's Show" and took Red Forman's advice and "put a ""genuine GM part"" in my GM".

But I'm going to carry a small screw driver and #15 torque in case I have to perform a field repair.

It will fail again... Many threads on this. GM tried to solve this issue with several recalls and failed miserably. The only thing your screwdriver and torx driver will do for you is give you something to play with while you wait for the tow truck if your column actually locks up and will not release.

There's a wire that plugs into your cigarette lighter on one end and your steering column wiring harness on the other that comes with most aftermarket CLB's. That tool unlocks the column.

If you do end up somewhere away from home when the K harness fails again and the column actually does lock up, keep in mind that jerking the steering wheel from side to side with a good amount of force may unlock it. Doesn't always work though...
