Default MGW Shifter Install

Total newbie when it comes to many mechanical things. I looked at the pictures that came on the installation cd didn't look too horrible. I'm gonna try to install the MGW shifter this weekend. Anything that I should watch out for or be careful about?

Thanks guys,

Les

It's a very straight forward install. You should have no trouble and you will enjoy the results. Isn't it too bad to have to cover that beautifully finished component with a boot?

I was pleasantly surprised at how well made the unit is.

Don't be in a rush to remove the interior pieces. Take your time and there should be no problems.

I definitely plan on taking it real slow. I'm not used to removing any of the interior pieces so I want to be real careful.

Let us know how it went. I'm putting mine in next week.

It's an easy mod and you'll be thrilled with the results. It may take you a while to get used to the very short and precise throws but you'll love it in the end. The install is basically just remove the old piece and put the new one in it's place and reverse the order of disassembly. The only thing you actually have to modify is the shift boot. Trimming it is no big deal though and MGW's directions are very good.

Good luck and let us know how it went

I've read that some have just left the shift boot alone. Will I have to trim the boot?

Also, if I don't have any issue shifting into any of the gears with stock shifter, will I be okay with the MGW or is there a chance that it will get out of alignment?

I had to cut mine... It's been a while since I did the install so I don't remember exactly how much more room was needed.

Make sure the trans is in neutral when you take the old shifter out and leave it there while you bolt the new one in and you should be fine. If you want to be extra cautious you can re-align the shifter during the install.

I did not see any way to get mine on without cutting the boot, but no big deal. I have the C5R delrin **** on mine, works pretty well at the track and looks cools. Did you get a **** also?

I did the install today and have to say that I'm pretty stoked about it. My brother is the mechanic and he told me to wait until Saturday but I wanted to do this one by myself.
The install went very smooth but the instructions do need to be upgraded to reflect the newer style shifter. The pictures didn't match the new shifter. Also, if I hadn't watched Greg taking apart my console to install my double din, I wouldn't have known to remove the waterfall (I have a vert) in order to remove the radio bezel. That should have been mentioned somewhere.

Took it out for a ride and while it is a bit more effort to move left and right, it was a total blast. I was literally flicking it into gear. Forget that rowing stuff. I can see what people are talking about when they say notchy compared to the stock shifter but if I like it brand new out of the box, I figure I'm gonna love it when it breaks in a bit.

I did get a C6 shift **** custom wrapped to match my Shale/neutral interior on my 03. The only issue is that the mouth of the boot is too small to fit over the bottom of the new shift **** and man that boot has to be cut down---a lot.

Has anyone retrofitted a C5 shift boot around a MGW shifter with C6 shift ****? Pictures would be appreciated.

Also, what vendors would carry shorter shift boots and shift boots that fit around the bottom of the C6 shift ****.

Totally enjoyed this mod. Can't wait to put a boot that fits back on.

Oh yeah, I was able to shift into all 6 gears and reverse with little effort. I'm glad that part of it worked out. Didn't want my brother to tell me he told me so.

Here is a pic without the shift boot. Yeah, the radio came from Dennis as well as the double din bezel. That boy definitely rocks!!!

Not to Hijack your thread but can you tell me about the double din bezel from double D?

I am interested in purchasing the Pioneer X930BT and sending my bezel to Dennis for Modding to double din.

Does the bezel look "Factory" perfect when you get it back? I am **** about my car and would only be intersted in making the purchase if the finish product looks like it came that way from the factory.

Please let me know how you like your unit, the quality of the bezel mod, fit and finish after the install. I would really appreciate your opinon. Thanks!!!

I think that Dennis does a great job with the bezel. It was a fantastic match to my shale/neutral interior and the fit was great. I'm sure others will chime in about the quality of Dennis' work.
