Default High oil pressure

I've read a whole bunch of the Threads on the high oil pressure subject and I've got it down....Bad sensor....Replace!

OK, but what I didn't really see was much about driving until you do replace the sensor.....Any issues?

I believe the sender will start to leak after a while. I drove mine for a couple months before I got around to replace it. It still wasn't leaking though.

I've been driving on my bad oil pressure sensor for 6000 miles.
Gonna get around to replacing it this winter, until then, racking up the miles and smiles.

Usually the cause of the failing sensor is oil getting through the internal seals, into the electronic portion. It will eventually work its way out and start leaking externally. As long as you have no clattering then you can keep on driving, till it starts to dump oil all over the place, therefore dripping down onto the exhaust.

I went ahead and changed the sensor, it only took about an hour and now everything is hunky-dory.

I looked at all the Threads here and in other sites, then I looked at the sensor itself and figured it was no more difficult that some of the stuff I've done on helicopters, so I just went ahead, took it out and put a new one in.

Sure hope you found a brass one to put in there.

Brass one? Of course, at O'Reilly's for about $38.00. I used some teflon tape and made sure the hard brass didn't strip out the aluminum threads....And I didn't take off the intake either!

Must be nice to be able to reach it without taking off the intake. Cool.

We must know each other then from the meetings. I'm terrible with names. Were you at Eureka Springs? I'm the guy that came here from S. Calif. last year and joined the RCC.

Hello, I recently started coming back to the forum as I just purchased a 99' c5 corvette. My car also has a faulty oil pressure sender, and I was wondering how to go about changing it? From what I have read, some say its under the intake and now I just read here that it can be changed without removing the intake manifold. Could you tell me where it would be located on my car and maybe point me to a thread with a step by step replacement. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks -David

Hi David, Good name! The sender is behind the intake on the driver's side. If you look back there next to the firewall and down, you can barely see it. Some people have cut holes in the cowling to access it however personally, I would never do that. Removing the intake is usually the only way to get to it although one person just a couple of days ago reported he got to his without doing this. The intake will come off in 15-30 minutes and its easy. You will find that you need two pieces of tape for the two rear-most intake bolts to hold them up just enough and not too high to get it out. Just be careful that you don't knock any debris into the ports when you pull it off and be sure to carefully clean things before you reinstall. Someone in here will have the torque numbers and of course, sequence the bolts back down. Seriously, its a simple job to do. Make sure you get a new "brass" sender.

Awesome. Thanks for the link feeder and thanks for the info dgrant. I will check it out in the next couple days. I was hoping to be able to change it without removing the intake however it looks as though it may be the easiest way to reach it. I'll be sure to get the brass sender when I go back to work tomorrow. Oh and another question, some have said they leak after the malfunction if you continue driving them. Is this True?
Thanks for the info everyone.

If oil got past the internal seal into the electronics, most likely it will leak more and more slowly

David, it may be easier for most folks to take off the intake manifold. In my case, I'm an old helicopter mechanic so replacing the sender without removing anything other than the left side engine cover was no big deal...I've worked in much tighter places!

Tell me more. How were you able to change it out withut pulling the intake manifold. I don't want to do the "cut a hole" method but pulling the intake sounds complex. Did you have to take off any of the plastic at the base of the windshield area ?. Besides the plastic motor cover on the driver's side, what else came off ?.

Just pull the intake "EAZY PEEZIE" and it will give you option to relocate it so if the new one fails changing it will be a 3 minute affair.
