Default Clutch issues

This morning back out of a driveway, I heard a light pop noise and could not remove the car from reverse. I turned the car off and placed the car in first depressed the clutch and the starter motor moved the car forward & the car stared in 1st gear. I was able to shift upm in gears with the clutch depressed but still does not feel correct. To stop was put the car in netural come to a stop and again with the starter motor and 1st gear it would start & I could shift the up gears. Checked my clutch fliud once I got home, the fliud was dark but appeared full. The clutch is not fully engaging. Question is this a new clutch slave?

When mine went it just started leaking. I don't think it made a noise.
Over the next few days check under the car - specifically the bellhousing inspection plate - for moisture. Mine showed nothing for a while. Then it did.
You should wait to buy parts until you have a solid diagnosis.
The slave is around $110.00. This is not a one afternoon job......

What year and model do you have? How many miles? Have you ever had work done on your drivetrain?

Can you shift through all of the gears cleanly with the car off?

Does teh clutch pedal feel firm? Can you pump it up at all or is there no resistance in the pedal?

Look for leaks under the car, around the bellhousing area, around master cylinder, around quick disconnect between master and slave.

Is this what you mean? It sounds like it is engaged all the time, so you must mean it is not DISengaging fully.

I don't know. Is it? It is not uncommont to see slave failures over time. I have also seen a handful of brand new slaves fail.

I have a 2001 cert/ 6 speed with 90,000 miles, I have had some slave issues if I kept the clutch pedal down a long time as I would loose clutch. I remedied it by just leaving the car in netural when stopped a long time. At this point I have no clutch and when stopped I use the motor to move the car in first gear and shift easy. The pedal is very firm and normally it was soft at the top. Appears a new slave and with 90,000 a new clutch disc, throw out bearing, pressure plate and carrier bearing. Looking to put back a stock Z 06 package, no mod's on the motor and I drive with a bit of passion not to hard.

answers to your questions. 2001 6 speed, no drivetrain work, 90k miles driven with a bit of gusto not terrible hard the occasional power shift or hole shot. Probably 65 % e-way miles and car shifts all rears when enfine is off. I'm thinking z06 clutch package new t/o bearing & pilot bearing and new slave, possibly new fly as a time issue rather than a resurface as I hope to have access to a freinds lift. The light pop sound I heard was I believe the clutch failed just as I was going into reverse.

Just ordered all the new parts from gm parts house. Plesently suprised at the price. The whole package moving up to a z06 package was about what it cost back in the early 70's when i was re clucching my 69.

Sounds like you have diagnosed it yourself. Good luck with the job.

If the clutch is indeed fairly fresh, I would not bother replacing it. It sounds like the slave failed and I would be very surprised if the clutch is not in perfect working order. If you can do the labor yourself, that is. If you are paying for labor, might as well do it while the drivetrain is out.

Another thing: If you decide you do need a clutch, I would not be afraid to have the stock flywheel resurfaced. Some advise against it, but I have never had issues, and in my opinion, it is a much better option that a lightweight aftermarket flywheel. Just make sure to check how much they actually take off, and measure the slave cylinder throw distance. If they take more than 1mm of material off the flywheel, you mightneed to shim the slave a bit to acheive full clutch release.

The parts will be here tomorrow. Good buy from GM Parts House, Z 06 clutch, p/plate and a new flywheel , slave & pilot bearing at my door forn 634.00. I have access to a lift for a weekend and if I needed to resurface the fly wheel its no longer a weekend. 90k on the clutch, I'm in my 60's if I do it all now should last near as long as me. Thanks for your input. I was pretty sure about my problem, just like the reassurance.
