If you have a 6-speed then I say go for it since almost everyone I know sees those gains. But if you have an A4 then I would be hesitant if you plan on modding it. Myself and many others now are having shifting problems and worse because of the signal sent from the MAF through the PCM to the trans.
I have two MAFs - one stock with screen, the other ported (ala Dremel tool) and de-screened.
I have logged hours of Autotap data with both, and have 'tuned' both using the MAF Translator.
Overall, I am getting more hp and torque with the stock MAF. The ported MAF causes a lot of weird fuel trims and a persistent WOT knock retard that I am unable to tune out with the MAFT.
Different cars yield different results though - and you might just be fine using the ported ends. Chevy removed the screen and opened up the MAFs in 2001, but not without PCM modifications to account for the variance in the airstream.
IMO, best to leave anything to do with the MAF alone with the exception of using the MAFT to adjust for increased flow rates as a result of cold-air intakes, etc. thru a STOCK MAF.
Cool thanks for the help guys. I did a search and got some good info from there. From your results Flinstone as well as others, I think it is best to leave it stock for now.
My 2 cents worth. I pulled the screen out of my stocker Mass Air. I picked up 8 rwhp with this mod alone! The car has kept gain for 3 years now and is running great! My girlfriends WS6 A4 has the screen pulled as well with no problems and a 9 rwhp gain! Now every car is a little different but it works for me!
