Anyone replace your intermediate steering shaft yourself?
I have about a 1/2" dead spot in my steering. I have replaced the rack and that didn't fix it. All bolts are tight, including the lower intermediate steering shaft coupler.
When I wiggle the steering wheel off center I hear a distinct clunk. I am pretty sure that the noise is coming from the intermediate steering shaft U joints (GM has a problem with these).
I have the procedure for removing it but the GM service manual doesn't show how to get at the bolt securing the upper coupler. It is under the brake booster. Unfortunately I have less access due to a vacuum manifold and gage sending units that I installed for my supercharger. However, I think that it is possible to get at the bolt if I remove the left inner fender. Is this how you got at the bolt? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Melting Slicks
I replaced the one on my wifes car. It was pretty simple
I just removed the coil cover, and turned the steering wheel so that the bolt was at about 10 o clock (approx) I used a ratchet and extension and got to it easily.
Bottom takes a long extension
