I found an EBCM on craigslist for a pretty good deal. It came off a wrecked car so there is no guarantee it is any good. I have a 98 coupe and mine works just fine but with everything I've been reading about them going bad and not available anymore, I thought this would be a good opportunity to have a spare if the dreaded day ever comes.
My question is, Is there a way to benchtest it with out actually putting it on my car before purchasing it? I doubt the seller would let me swap it out to make sure its good but I would hate to be out $$$ if it is bad. I know on most electrical components you can just check ohm resistence between certain pins but I'm no electricial by any means so I wouldn't even know where to start.
I'm curious to know this as well. I would imagine if it could be done there would be a lot more of them that could be repaired. I wish someone on this board with that kind of electrical knowledge could figure it out. I would definitely pay to know what is wrong with mine and what to do to diagnose/repair it.
I think you need hyd and computer inputs to check completely. Ohm it out will only check for ground and open circuits.
If it's cheap enough,it's worth taking a chance. There is a thread on here that fixes the most common issues.
He has a 98. AFAIK No easy fix that has been reported for 97-2000 units. Easy enough to be confused with the early vrs late EBCM. Happens all the time.
FWIW, my brother needed an EBCM for his 99 Olds. GM said they had it but $1800. Not so sure they quoted the correct part there. Anyway, he got used ones...two bad and finally the third was good. I'd say it's a crap shoot at best. Either buy it for really cheap or demand a money back gaurantee.
