Default Oil Filter Question

Hey Guys,
know this sounds down right dumb on my part. But here goes,I have a small leak coming from my oil filter, tried to snug up but stll leaking. I guess the gasket is bad.

Question when I remove & replace filter how much oil will flow out. Have always drained my oil first then removed filter. Just did an oil change recently and was not looking to replace again.

Was not sure how much oilI will need to replace after I change out the filter.

Thanks

The same amount that you lose when doing an oil change.

The filter holds about 8 ounces, and probably about 2 or 3 ounces will drain out of the engine when the filter is removed.

I have seen many filters leak at the gasket surface--They are just to thinnly made--The worst brand i see is 1st Frm or any non manufacture labelel filter (like at oil chsange places) i would spend the extra money and only buy A/C delco---K&N or Mobil 1 filters--

Oil filters can sometimes leak at the crimped seam between the can and the base, so tightening it more will not cure that kind of leak.

Believe it or not, the only oil filter that I had ever leak on me was a NAPA Gold. I was pretty dissapointed since I had to replace it after only a couple of hundred kilometers. I guess price is not always an indication of a quality gasket.

while you get the filter off, I'd double check and make sure that when you last changed the oil, the old filter didn't leave behind it's gasket on the sealing surface on the block. When you put the new one on, you'll essentially have a double gasket causing the leak...

When I change its oil, I always visually inspect the sealing surface and wipe the surface clean with a rag before installing the new filter

AntonioZ06, I believe if he would have put the new filter on with the old seal still stuck in place, he would be getting a huge leak at the sealing area.

My son did his own oil change after I showed him how to do it 2 times.
When he started the car and drove down the street he had a stream of oil painting the asphalt. I stopped him and said that the filter wasn't on tight. I asked where the old oil was. He said it drained out when he removed the filter. WRONGO

We put the car back up on ramps and drained out the oil by removing the plug in the oil pan. Got about 2 quarts. He added 5 qts to the 5 already in his car so he pumped about 8 qts onto the street. Ever put 10 qts into a car that takes 5?

We then tightened the filter. It felt like it was crossthreaded. VERY HARD TO TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. Was able to tighten it and then ran another 5 qts of pure synthetic oil into the car. (10 qts total ; 5 now on the street and 5 more).

Oil didn't leak. I said when we do the next oil change I want to see if the filter isn't crossthreaded.

About 3 months later time for another oil change. Drained oil and removed the filter. SUPRISE. 2 gaskets on there. One kinda swquished and very misshapen. The other one pretty round looking but I was surprised that the car went several thousand miles without leaking.
Luckily the filter was not crossthreaded.
ALWAYS CHECK TO SEE THAT THE GASKET COMES OFF AND IS NOT STUCK ON THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE.
