Default upgrading to Z06 MAF?

Are there any benefits to upgrading my 97 C5 ls1 maf to the 85mm Z06 maf? I am about to purchase one and just wanted to know what kind of benefits/gains it will make.

Thanks

My car had one on it when I bought it.
The PCM wasn't tuned for it.
Car ran 14.3 @ 97 in the 1/4 mile.
Replaced with a stock MAF.
13.0 @ 107mph.
You will have change the airbridge piping to accomodate it.
And get the 3 wire to 5 wire conversion harness.
And have the PCM tuned.

All for probably no gain on a stock engine.

Hmm.. So I would need to change the maf inlet/exit piping as well I am assuming (to account for the larger diameter)? Also, I am doing a H/C swap as well as putting on the LS6 intake manifold. Think the stock 75mm unit supplies enough air to maximize the benefit of these components?

I appreciate the help

The Z06 MAF is larger in and out. So yes.
The real experts will chime in here on the H/C/Intake change.
But the Z06 also uses the 75mm TB.
I was told it's fine to a point. I don't know where the change over to larger needs to happen HP wise.
I also don't know if there is a larger TB that fits the LS6 intake manifold? Guys? The 90mm TB has a different bolt pattern. I suppose an adapter could be made.
Anyway, as long as you are doing H/C/intake, and will need a tune, might as well add the larger MAF in the process.

BTW, I'm in the same boat. After putting the correct MAF in mine, I have bought heads, cam, FAST intake, 90mm TB, headers etc. So I get to change all mine to the larger stuff too.

On a stock engine it isn't worth the benefits and will require a tune. Now if you've got h/c it isn't necessary, but I recommend it as it'll allow the engine to ingest more air. I'd also consider sending your LS6 intake to TPIS for the 90mm snout upgrade. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Thanks for the replies.. I actually have the HP-Tuners pro software so I can hopefully do the tuning whenever I want/need.. I made a deal on an LS6 maf this morning so I think I am going to go through with it after all.. if anything, I can "grow" into the larger maf in the future when i continue to do upgrades.

Pre-Z06, how much does TPI's usually charge for the 90mm upgrade?

I would buy that and an LS2 TB and then get a FAST intake

THEN all you need is cam, heads, LT headers ......

Because they are FAST

If you go here:

http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=25

You can get the Z06 (screened and unscreened) MAF table to input using HP tuners. Pretty excellent write up. Also talks about the diff from the 97-98 PCM vs. 99 up.

I found a used FAST 102 setup with the 90mm GM TB, rails, injectors and all the hardware that I'll pick up tomorrow. Came off a spotless C5, and well, intake manifolds don't wear out. Couldn't pass up the price. So it appears AutoX and I are on similar paths.

Excellent.. Thanks for the link Ron.. I'll be sure to use the new MAF table when putting in the LS6 maf.. that FAST 102 setup sounds great.. would love to get my hands on one eventually.. but for now, I am going to see how the LS6 manifold does.

Anyone know a good place to find larger rubber coupler/joints to accomodate the larger MAF so I can bolt it to the K&N intake bridge and K&N filter?? I am assuming I will definitely need these as the 85mm LS6 maf OD is larger than my stock unit...

I believe it's 350 using your manifold or 750 for theirs, double check with them to be sure.

I was thinking on an aftermarket mass airflow sensor I have a 2000 c5 that I am adding BBK manifold and 80 mm throttle body comp cam camshaft k&n cai kooks headers and x pipe I am told my stock mass airflow sensor will handle my current setup and then some. I don't want to change sensors just for the sake of change or make things worse with the wrong sensor, I would like advice on this matter. Thank you

Keep the factory MAF, more problems out of the aftermarket units than the stock parts.

If you're springing for an aftermarket intake and TB, I would go FAST92 with a LS2 tb. The BBK is worth a few over the LS6 but in my opinion heat soak is not worth it. I would spend money on an 80mm TB, gains are not worth it, IMO.

Thanks to 93polo I just got back from speed shop , told them to stop order on BBK Ssi , the heat soak just makes since . Also I have a BBK throttle body on my truck, noticed that the cover fell off the side exposing the gears and electronics , I took it off cleaned my stock throttbody with some never dull throttle body cleaner and my electric toothbrush. Now my truck works great, anyone want a used BBK throttle body, and I bought a fast 92 for my vette and an ls2 throttle body, my vette and I thank you
