Ive noticed the past two times i drove my car that i have a squealing sound coming from the engine bay but it only does it when I'm in gear and driving. The cars a 6spd and when i put it in neutral when going down the road it'll stop.I think the cold weather and not driving it much has something to do with it also. After about 20 minutes of driving it'll stop.Im doubting its the belt but i just don't understand why it stops when its not in gear.
The main source of squeals in the C5 are the two belts and their associated idler pulleys along with the A/C clutch....
remove the A/C belt and run without that for a while.
If the squeal goes away the issue is either the belt, idler pulley or A/c clutch.
If it does not then it is either the main belt, pulley or harmonic balancer.
Had spin the pulleys on the afflicted system. The should spin freely not wobble nor feel gritty.
On mine at 140K (s)miles, the tensioner was the culprit.... not the pulley part but the tensioner itself.
It lost its spring power and ability to keep the appropriate tension. Without the tension, the belt squeeled.
