Wheel positioner sensor install question
In middle of installing the new sensor I got from GMPartshouse onto the steering column shaft. I taped the steering wheel to the steering housing so it wouldn't move. Didn't want to screw the air bag coil. I pulled the entire assembly out of the car and placed it standing with the sensor up. I removed the dust cover and the old sensor. Here is where it went south. 
The new sensor(with the pin still in place) would not slide over the shaft and seat into the green plastic holder. The only way to get it aligned was to untape the wheel and move the shaft so the sensor will seat into the green holder. I moved it about 30 to 40 degrees.
After installing the sensor with the dust cover, I removed the black pin. Then moved the wheel back to where it was so I could slide it back into the steering yoke. Then installed it back into the car.
My question.
Shouldn't the new sensor fit right back where the old one came out?
I saw no other way to do this.
I did a search in order to do this job, and there was nothing that addressed that issue.
