Installing a K&N filter question - '98 coupe
Replaced the stock filter with a K&N. I got the right filter - (P/N 33-2111) that I'm sure of, but the filter came with a rubber gasket and illustrations on how to apply the gasket to make a good seal. The air box illustrated in the instructions was old, and I'm guessing from a C4, unless the '97 has a different configuration from the '98. I messed around with the gasket, but it appeared painfully obvious that it didn't fit the '98's removable bracket. The K&R doesn't fit snuggly into the bracket like the stock filter did, and I'm worried that contaminents could get in the engine. It does, however, seem to have a good seal in the direction that the air is flowing - sans the gasket, or fitting snuggly into the removable bracket. Is this how this K&R filter is supposed to install?
Thanks.
Thanks.
I installed a K&N filter last night and did not use the gasket either. I plan to watch it for a few weeks before removing the maf screen.
I just picked up my 2002 Torch Red Coupe from a popular dealership in Salt Lake City. I got the 6-speed manual and all the bells and whistles. I just picked up a K&N filter and noticed the same thing about the gasket. I didn't try the filter to see if it fit tight in the housing. Have you looked at yours and checked to see if it was snug? I also noted that the directions appear to require the gasket to be attached to the "non-removable" portion of the air cleaner. That would be a real hastle to try and install.
I noticed that your car has a Z06 air box....I didn't see that on my options list although the Mid America said that my K&N filter (labeled a Z06 filter) would fit. Do all the later C5s have the Z06 air box?
Also, how do I find the "born of date" of the car? I seem to remember a website I came across at one time. Does the VIN number have that info or is it somewhere else on the car.
Thanks in advance.
Jeff.

I've always used Meguiars....what's Zaino all about? I've heard of it but never used it. I hope I'm not straying from the original topic with my question.

Hey Al! :seeya
docman,
Welcome to the forum!
The K&N gasket is not required as many members here have discovered.
Z06 lid is only stock on the Z06 but you can buy one from a forum vendor (Ken Fichtner is a good source) or your local dealer. It's a direct replacement for your stock lid but has a larger air inlet.
Born-on date can be found by posting a request in the C5 General section. Just title your post "Need born-on date" and list your VIN number within the body of the post. One of the very helpful souls with access to that info will run your VIN and return your date to you. The date is not embedded in your VIN.
Zaino is probably the most popular paint/interior care brand on this forum. The Zaino Brothers offer paint, leather and vinyl protection products. You can read all about it on their web site at http://www.zainobros.com/
