Default very unusal starting problem

Have had starting problems, replaced the starter and had the wiring replaced at the starter due to being burnt. Everything was working great.
last wed., i parked the car in my angled driveway for lunch. Went to leave and for the first time, the starter did nothing. Gauges all came on, but when turned to start, the voltage gauge went too "0", no solenoid clicking, nothing. Also the steering wheel stayed locked.

Came back from work and tried again, still the same. Attempted to clutch start it backing down the driveway, didnt have enough speed so that didnt work. Once on level street, the car started just fine. Put it into the garage and stopped and started it over ten times with no problem. Went to the forum, and read, and read.

Friday morning, sat, sunday, the car stayed in the garage and started/stopped numerous times without fail. Had company coming so i started it up, backed it out onto the angled driveway and shut it off.

Just for the hell of it, tried to start there in the driveway.....again, nothing! Let sit for 6 hrs before i got a couple of guys there for christmas to help push it in, and the car started. All times that the car did nothing was on an incline. Have checked all connections and they are tight. Cleaned the key resistor with an eraser i think more out of desperation than anything.

Why? what? could possibly be causing this to happen ONLY when on an incline? Im honestly thinking it is the switch, but to do it only on an incline has me And no....there are no drugs involved.

Any chance that since it's on an incline and you're presumably holding the brake that you may not have the clutch depressed all the way? I would eliminate the clutch switch first, I think. Maybe the starter solenoid or connections to it or to the battery.

Is the security light flashing at the time it doesn't turn over? Have you pulled your codes via the DIC yet? The last thing to try, while sitting on the incline and it not turning over, access the TDR in the passenger footwell and remove it's cover carefully. Make absolutely sure the car cannot move with you on the wrong side of the car. Turn on the ignition, then manually close the TDR relay contacts. The car will or should start.

You state that the steering column stays LOCKED? If so you really need to have the recall done on it. I would be real uncomfortable driving it like that.

As to the start problem, you say that the voltage drops to zero but no solenoid movement. I see no load causing the low voltage, might be the switch, but the incline thing makes no sense.

The steering wheel did not unlock, that time. Just got done starting it in the garage numerous times, but this time it was sitting there and the voltage shot up to 17v, shut down the gauges, reset the seat.

I just had the starter etc. redone as stated due to this very same problem, but the wires were burnt. Replaced the starter "just because".

right now, i am leaning to the switch. This would make these things happen. But it didnt do it again on the incline.

Could be your ignition switch and Bill Curlee has a step by step to fix it yourself.

Default Clutch Start Switch Linkakge

On my 90' (6 speed transmission) the clutch start switch linkage tab wore so I could not depress the clutch far enough to activate the starter selenoid. I finally (today) took a torch to it

I removed the clutch start switch just North of the steering wheel in line with the clutch pedal (corvette facing east). I also removed the linkage (about 2 inches long).

I heated the switch end of the linkage with a torch and straigtened out the first L (there are two Ls on that end). I then heated cherry red the linkage end again and created a new L making the straight part of the linkage effectively 1/8 inch shorter. Then reinstalled the clutch start switch and linkage.

Works great as I can now start the engine with the clutch depressed about 1/2 the way to the floor board.

Just in case that is your issue
