I am installing my melling oil pump and I was wondering if they slot in the driven gear needs to be oriented with the keyway? I was thinking 180 from the key or maybe it doesn't matter. Why is this slot there anyway? Also this isn't my pic, just borrowed it, I have the newer 10296 w/ countersunk cover.
The slot is there for orientation during automated pump assemble of the rotor to stator. Though I don't believe it matters, some will line the slot up with the keyway thinking that this is the best location for overall balance. There might be a slight mass difference to compensate for the mass of the key. Again, I don't believe it makes any difference in balance at this small of a radius.
All the engine manual says about it: 1. Align the splined surfaces of the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump drive gear and install the oil pump.

Thank you. I guess it's always better to ask just to make sure. Does the manual also mention using 0.003" feeler gauges between the gear and housing to center the pump?
