Default New guy with a problem.

So i just bought an 01 navy blue vert today and on the way home i stopped to drop dad off, he wanted to see all the classic cars at the dealer which were pretty amazing, and when i started the car the IC seemed to start up like normal for a second then went totally dead, no DIC , no gauges, no HUD, no stereo, no HVAC. But the car was still running i had driven it maybe a hundred or so feet before i noticed everything was dead. So i stoped and restarted the car and everything came back but the DIC kept alternating "Service Traction Control" and "Service Active Handling" messages. I'd read on here that you can drive just find just dont count on any help in the rain or snow or craziness. After dinner i hopped in and have killed and restarted the engine several times since and everything seems ok and the message hasnt come back.

I had read on here that someone else was having a similar issue, their message would show up once every couple weeks, but i cant seem find that post. I also think someone had mentioned it could be a bad battery, but i'm not entirely sure i'm remembering correctly.

Well i found a bunch of codes but only one current

Pre Drive
10- pcm P1571 H P1689 H
28 TCS C1277 H
80- radio NO Comm (aftermarket radio)
A0-LDCM B2282 H B2284 H U1064H
A1-RDCM B2283 H B2285 H U1064H
A6-SCM B0851H B0846 HC B0856H
B0-RFA U1000H U1064H

I cleared everything and took it for a short spin around the block(maybe a mile or 2) and the only code left is B0846 HC, also the problem did not recur yet if it does i'll get any new codes up here.

unfortunately i was not the one to install the radio so i have no idea if it was done properly or not.

I"ll test the battery as soon as i figure out who stole my multimeter. I assume the factory battery should fill most of its little compartment, i only ask because the one i have says something like "eco power" or some crap on the top and looks 2 sizes too small. If its good i should probably try to wedge it in place somehow so it doesnt move around and cause problems somehow.

You don't want a weak battery on your vette. C5's EAT batteries. This is what it should look like (thanks google):

The proper battery for your car will be group 75. Some members have substituted group 78 batteries as they're slightly larger...

Thanks for the info guys, I got to check the batt voltage today. It read 12.3ish volts with the neg wire disconnected.
After i checked it and reconnected the amp someone put in the trunk i went driving around. and now i have 2 questions: Would me pulling the battery wire be responsible for the new U1000 and U1064 codes on the B0 RFA(they were both H codes)? And i've been looking around for a new battery but cant seem to find one with 700 cca and 110 minute reserve capacity. The closest i've found is a Duralast gold, i've had good luck with the brand in the past on other cars, but was wondering if there was one everyone preferred or if i should try to find one of those gel batteries people keep suggesting.

My 04 C5 doesn't eat batteries. My first one (OEM) lasted 5 years and the replacement is 3 years old both AC Delco.

FWIW I just posted about this the other day.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...batteries.html

Seen batteries wreck havoc many times on different cars. Simplest place to start IMO.

BTW, congrats on the new car. Navy Blue Vert here too. You should post up some pictures over on the General Forum.

If you type the following into google:

site:forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-tech "which battery"

you'll have about a month's worth of reading ahead of you. There are a lot of opinions on this. I have been using Die Hard batteries for quite some time with good success because they are rated well and if they do fail within the warranty period Sears WILL replace them (done this a few times) for free.

I think for my next battery I'll try fitting a group 78 battery in there. There are several members on this forum that have done it and I've not heard of any issues. Sears makes a Die Hard Gold Group 78 with 795 CCA and 110 Minute Reserve Capacity for $109.99.

I, also, had a Die-hard which was used when I bought the car in '05. Just replaced it (even tho' it tested fine...) due to code issues. Still have that battery as a spare. Good batteries.

Painter, the same thing happened to me when i bought my C-5 this year. the dealer put in an undersized battery, once i realized this i replaced it with the correct battery and it fixed 90% of my problems.

I am running a Duralast Gold and I have not had any problems with it. I have never heard of Eco Power batteries at all. A google search doesn't bode well either as I didn't see a proper automotive battery under that name.

I dont remember ever running any die hards, but duralast has always treated me well. The place i got the car from said to use ac delco, and mentioned someone bought optima and the quality has really dropped off since. I may swing by sears or someplace and pick one up and swap it when i fix the craptastic stereo some guy installed. Thanks for all the help guys. Oh, when i get access to a camera that isnt attached to a cell phone i'll take some nice pics and post em over in general.
