taking brakes off to paint, what size Allen wrench will I need to go buy to do this?
any other special tools needed?
I have taken the brakes off quite a few times on C5's and I just don't recall any allen wrenches being needed. They are all metric bolts to R&R the brakes from what I could recall...
Any special procedures for a complete fluid swap with a BIG dose of air in the system?
I was R&Ring (and painting the passenger front caliper), left the hose in the can overnight and it gravity fed all of the fluid out of the resevoir.
Could find reasonable Dot 3 fluid today, so the REST of the project will have to wait til tomorrow evening at the earliest.
By letting the reservoir run completely dry and letting the entire system get air, you've opened a large can of worms. The ABS system can only be bled by an instruction from the dealer's Tech2 tool. The cylinder walls can be scored by a dry brake piston while there's no fluid in there. I'd add fluid to the reservoir, and keep it topped off until you see fluid at the same hose you left off the last time - that'll displace most of the air in the system and get fluid into the cylinder, and then bleed what you can normally. If the pedal doesn't feel right after this step, do NOT drive the car, have it towed to the dealer. Then, you'll need to take it to a dealer for the ABS bleed.
The correct way to bleed the C5 brakes is to Gravity bleed them. Fill the reservoir and open the bleeder on the caliper to be bled. Leave the fill cap off,, let it bleed through, keep filling the reservoir
I wasn't aware the C5 used the Tech II as it's an OBD III car...And am seriously hoping it was one of the items they simplified when going from the C4 to the C5. Later C4's DID require an ABS bleed procedure, while earlier ones (like my 89 for example) did not.
I've heard folks also say that you can bleed the system, have everything rock hard, go drive it and have it feel mushy. Forcing an ABS assisted slow down purged the air out of the ABS unit... Either way, there's a solution, and I'll be it doesn't require a flatbed to the dealership. (Something I'd be REAL hesitant to do based on past experience.)
I'll be using a procedure emailed to me (which incidentally didn't mention using a Tech II to bleed the ABS unit) and go from there...
