Riders tell me that my 2000 C5 manual transmission car with 68,000 miles has a very regular chirping sound. It is described as a "chirp" rather than a squeak or rattle. It is at a frequency that I can not hear. The chirp is only heard inside the car.
The sound does not change in volume or rapidity with ground speed or engine speed which should rule out problems with belts, pulleys and rotating engine and drive line parts. The sound does not change with air conditioner settings.
It is very regular and is normally at a rate slightly faster than once per second although it does slow at times for no apparent reason.
Again, engine speed makes no difference except that the engine must be running for the chirp to occur.
The chirp sometimes disappears when the clutch is pushed in. The chirp then reappears when the clutch is released with the car in gear or out of gear, rolling or not rolling.
I've done several Forum SEARCHES on chirps, squeaks, and rattles with no success. Any guesses as to the cause for this noise?
Can anyone tell me from the shop manual if the heater blower fan stays on all the time, but at a much reduced speed, even when you push the OFF button?
Took a while, but we found the source of the chirping noise.
Careful observation showed a very slight wobble in the harmonic balancer.
Replaced it and the noise is gone.
Good to hear you found your issue! Sorry it seems no one was able to help you, I would have never guessed it to be the balancer as it should have sped up with engine speed in that case, Oh well..hope it stays away!!
