Default mail order tunes

I have a 02 coupe 6speed and I am going to order some long tubes and a differant CAI than the one I have now. My question is , with a mail order tune how is it sent and how do you get it. Dumb question I know but just not sure how they are sent out are would I do better to have it dyno tuned. I have seen on here that you can get by with a mail tune and not need a dyno tune , I would just like to know what the members on here have to say. Thank you very much. Richard

Actually, I think most tuners that do mail orders would tell you that the dyno or road test tune is much better than a mail order; with a mail order tune, they have to set things rather conservatively, as they can't actually tell how your motor will respond. If the car is in their hands they'll be able to squeeze a couple extra horses out by knowing how your particular car responds to timing and fuel and such.

But, I am not a tuner so I can't be held accountable if this isn't true; I came to that conclusion during my research on possibly getting a MOT or dyno tune myself, and listening to what Doug @ ECS has to say.

Having the car in person is better but for a car which is basically stock (even minor mods) the mail order tune will be close and saves you some money.

ECS did the mail order tune for my bolt on 00. for simple bolt ons, they have done enough over the years that they can get you close to perfect as long as you tell them everything that has been done to the car.

The reason a mail order tune makes sense is a tuner, such as ecs, has tuned many cars, in almost every conceivable combination, and they have compiled data on what works for a particular combination. So depending on your mods they can get close to the tune it requires.

Tuning is about logging and making adjustments. If you cant/aren't logging data and making corrections based on the information your taking a shot in the dark. All cars are not the same and all tunes and mods are not the same. Atmospheric conditions and altitude all play a part in it.

You need to log air fuel ratio in order to properly make corrections.

How you log the data can be done on a dyno or on the streets. A load bearing dyno is a lot easier to tune with as you don't have to worry about traffic and other things likes cops when you do the WOT logging... LOL

It can be done either way, how good the tune is will depend on the tuner and the information/data being logged.

100%

Corvettes of Westchester has EFI AUTOCAL which is a major improvement over the standard mail order tune. The EFI AUTOCAL Interface module allows you to data log the PCM and get the info back to the tuner.

He uses that data (which you down load into the AUTOCAL scanner and E-mail back to him) and he builds you a new updated tune to get you PCM Tune that much more fine tuned. Check out the info:

Thanks for the info Bill. I just sent Chuck a PM regarding a C5 that I'm looking at that needs a tune, and truly didn't want to pull and send the computer in. Now I see there's a better way. I already sent the cam specs and other mods on the car and I'm waiting for Chuck's reply. Glad you posted the video link..............thanks. AZ

Thank you Billy.... If you're not going to do an IN-PERSON STREET tune, then the AutoCal PACKAGE

is your BEST option. It allows us to make any adjustments you need any time you like.

The BEST part of it is that we can do DATALOGS with it to verify that the tune is

SPOT ON THE MONEY. You get the best performance and the best mileage possible

and we know how the vehicle runs with the octane and type of fuel you are using...

Lots of things change from location to location.... FUEL, OCTANE, ALTITUDE, WEATHER, etc

and with AutoCal and a good data-logging session you're always assured that

the car is running it's best.... If it's not, we send you a new tune to fix it....

It's a few more bucks, but it's the RIGHT way to do it if you're not local to someone.

Stay TUNED!
