Auto Trans Output Shaft
Anyone who has had their diff out notice how much play is in the trans output shaft?
I can move it around quite a bit, the manual trans I have laying around the output shaft is solid, as in no lateral movement.
This auto I just pulled the diff off & noticed I can grab the output shaft & wiggle it around quite a bit.

Ok... how about a diff. tactic. Who can point me to a shop to call that does a lot of work on C5 Auto Trans. I'm sure they should be able to provide some input.... on the output lol

It's not uncommon for the automatic shaft to have some movement. The manual shaft will be much tighter compared to the auto. If you would like to go into more detail feel free to give us a call. Thanks

I just checked the 50K mile 01 A4 I have sitting in the garage. I would say the shaft will wiggle approx 1/8" out at the end total. Not real scientific, but it feels pretty tight to me.
I can go measure it precisely if you like.

Thank you both for the replies, that sounds about right for this trans as well. I have the diff out due to the output shaft seal leaking & wasn't sure if that amount of play was normal & was causing the seal to leak. New seal should be here on Tue so I can install it & get they guys car back to him.
