I was looking things over under the hood today and noticed a possible problem. Should the sheath on this bit of wiring be seperated from the connector like this? And .... what exactly is this?
I was afraid it was "normal". Wish I could get a few bits of heavy duty heat shrink aound it. It sure looks shoddy. At least when the A/C starts to act up I will know where to look for damaged wiring.
That is just cheap wire protector the factory uses to keep them from burning or ripping where they are routed. They clip them near the end. In lots of places they just tape the ends up with electrical tape in the interior and some under hood locations. It's not a big deal. If your AC fails I'll bet that is not why...

Why would you be afraid it was normal? It doesn't look shoddy. The plastic sheath is a shield over the wires to protect them from abrasion not to make them look good. The sheath isn't a strain relief. The strain relief for the wires is in the end of the connector. At some point the strain relief has to end and the wires support themselves. I would leave it alone. Adding silicone there could have just the opposite affect of what is intended and by stiffening the wires make them more susceptible to breaking. Have had many cars with the same AC sensor with the same wiring and have never had an issue with the wiring. Quality isn't in how something looks but in successfully being able to do the job it is intended to do, which this does just fine.
