How do I remove

the larger flip-up plastic door covering the ash tray and lighter without doing any damage so I can replace it.
Dumb question , but I want to refinish it out of the car if possible.

Think you have to take the entire bezel off to get to the back side.

I'll have to

look closely. Does the bezel snap off? I really should buy a manual, but I may not keep the C5 much longer, so I hate to invest in one.

Bezel does not just snap off. Screws in the console to slide it back and near ignition under cover plate also.

Go to the MGW shifter website. There is a video that shows the procedure for removing the bezel.

NO SNAPS! It has to be removed from behind, so the bezel has to be removed completely. Once you have it off look carefully and you can see the two plastic rivets you can push out then remove the lid.
