I have a 2000 vert today while driving I heard a humming noise it seam to pe the fuel pump. I know you should hear the pump runnig when you turn on the key but I can hear this while the car is idling. Is this a sign of the fuel pump going out or should I not have to worry about it?
No - The fuel pump on the C-5's are a bit noisy -- this is Normal!! To compund the issue it is 24" behind you!! Almost all other vehicles it is 6' behind you so even if it did make some noise you would never hear it. I know mine will be a little louder if I'm below a 1/2 tank of gas.....the air space doesn't dampen the sound like a full tank would.
Now! - Have you had the Vette a long time and it is now making noise? or is this a fairly new to you Vette and you are now noticing it?
I have changed mine out and it makes noise mostly when it has been run for a long time and has a chance to heat up the fuel (Really after a long trip or really hot summer temps)
It's not a major issue - BUT if it bugs you you could change it out! Let me know and I can give you a heads up on how to do it!

Matt, may be true on the older vette the newer one,s you have to drop cradle and tank to get to the pump on 2000 are what ever and newer.... Robert

This is correct - the 2003 1/2+ Up you have to drop the cradle in order to access the fuel pump from the top of the tank "BUT" on the 1997-2003 early it is easily accessible - since it is just right in front of the rear tire
Remember that the fuel in the tank helps keep the fuel pump cool so running w/low fuel in the tanks is not a good thing IMO. When I'm on entended trips I try not to get let the fuel level go much past 1/2 tank...
Matt: If you change out the pump and the new one still makes noise after a long drive on a hot day. Please let me know. I am on my fourth (4th) new pump and I have the same problem with all of them.
I have a quick question regarding your response. On your extended trips, if you let the gas level go below 1/2, does your fuel pump start to whine on hot days?
