Default Heater controls a pain to replace?

None of my heater face works at all. I cant see any of the settings so I just guess and let it run. The heater works fine and AC too. The question i have is I am going to put in I-pod adapter and will have center console out here in a few days. Is the heater unit hard to replace with a new one, I have an '04 and dont want to go the junkyard route, I would rather go new.
If it is complicated then I'd rather have the dealer do it. If its plug and play I'm sure it cant be that hard. Anyone have pics of replacing heater control module?

This is a common problem. If you know how to solder, dimming controls are easily repairable. I've had the problem and repaired it myself. If you do a search on the forum, you will find instructions. Since you'llhave the console apart, you're half way there. Other than a soldering iron, you'll also need some mini-bulbs which are easily obtainable. You can get them from Radio Shack or a source that will be mentioned in the instruction post. If you can't solder, there are members that can do it for you. A control unit costs about $400 that you don't need to spend.

Nothing to lose if you plan to replace it anyway.

If you decide to replace, once you have the console out its just a few screws in the bracket and disconnect the electrical connector.

I'm not at all experienced with sodering, I hate the idea of getting another unit from a junk yard, but on the other hand $400 is a steep buy from the dealer,I could probally buy 3-4 junk yard ones to just 1 new one and eventually getting the same problem. Taking the console out isnt that hard I think im going with junk yard ones for now. Thank you for the info people...

First check on the forum and see if someone has a good one for sale. I think sometimes someone here buys the old ones, fixed the lights and resales them. Worth a try, and if you have all the stuff out for the radio, its plug and play.

You could have yours repaired with a lifetime guarantee probably cheaper than a used one that will have the same problem sooner or later. Here is the one I used. www.davescorvetteilluminations.com

Take note of the connector on the back it can be a little tricky getting it back on if you don't look at closely when you disconnect it.

I just had mine fixed. Its easy to get out of the car, plenty of posts showing that. I sent mine to a guy on Ebay, it took a week and cost about $66:00 plus I had to ship it to him. It was all cleaned and the lights all worked and the display is super bright. He was call vettevolt. There are many people doing it.
