Fixed Shifting Problems...don't overlook the clutch!!
Finally fixed my shifting problems that have been an issue since last season. I just got done replacing the whole clutch assembly which has been a suspect for a while. As stated on a earlier post I indicated that when the clutch was installed last season I apparently never had it quite adjusted properly. This caused it to overheat ( ET streets+ H/C+ 150 shot+slipping clutch= :mad ) and distort the disk. This in turn put a 1/4" groove in the pressure plate and scored the flywheel. The clutch still was grabbing well but had a bad chatter at engagement plus kept me from hitting all the gears at the track.
I learned something very interesting about the T56 transmissions that we have. They are EXTREMELY sensitive to clutch disengagement. If the disk is not fully released it will cause a notchy shift feel and will keep the tranny from synchonizing properly which in turn will effect shifts.
To back this up I also installed a clutch in 98 Viper GTS this weekend. It was also suffering from the same symptoms. After I removed the clutch and throughly inspected it I also discovered that the disk was "swelled" and was keeping the input shaft of the transmission spinning at a speed that was not allowing it to shift smoothly with the clutch pedal fully depressed.
Both cars shift so smooth I still can't believe it. My C5 shifts so smooth it feel's like a stocker!!
I know that many of you are having issues with the high rpm shifts, like I was, and notchy shifting. Don't rule out what I have described above. It took me the last 5 months to get to the bottom of it and hopefully it may help others.
As further note, the clutch I am using is Carteks setup. Its too bad my own inexperince with there clutch caused me to kill it, but now that I know how to set them up it feels great. Grip was never an issue and it shifts very smooth.
Good luck to all with your tranny problems. I'm back to the track! :)

For test purposes, could you put some slicks on there and do a 6800rpm launch at the track. :)
Glad you figured things out, at least there wasn't any major damage done.

I can tell you right now that the car has NO notchy shifting and goes through the gears like my girlfriends 2000 Mits. Eclipse!
I haven't done any "power shifting" because I want to break it in properly this time! I did however roll on to the highway and pull 2 & 3 gear to about 5200 and it was smooth as silk!
I have spent the last three weeks carefully looking into this problem and firmly believe that that is most of the trouble with these high rpm shifting problems.

Thanks for the report, it makes me feel a lot better. I've been having trouble lately getting my car into gear during high RPM power shifts. And I'm happy to hear it's probably the clutch causing this and not the tranny. I'm running a Z06 clutch, and I'm sure it'struggling to handle my HP with the heads/cam. I know Dave... you told me so. :D Cartek clutch is definately in my future! :yesnod:

I don't care what anyone says the ZO6 is just as bad as a stock LS1 clutch when it comes to hard driving head/cam setups. These T56 tranny's are a lot stronger then we think and I feel that most shifting problems are related back to the clutch.
My car is night and day different with the fresh clutch and after what I found inside the clutch it made me stop wondering and confirm what the problem has been.
