Default Power steering pump pulley replacement

How do I replace my power steering pulley? I heard it has to be pressed on?

I've been hearing a squeak from my engine and thought my belt was just loose on my supercharger bracket so I went to go tighten it today and started the car turned the wheel power steering pump making weird noise and wasn't working correctly. So a quick look at the pump revealed that the pulley cracked pretty badly and the drive is just spinning on it.

How do I replace this thing? Also heard of people putting C6 pulley's on them because they are metal.

You can rent the power steering pully removal/installation tool from a parts store. The big names loan them out for free.

You will need to press it on with the tool, and yes switch to the LS2 style pulley. The LS1 pulley is solid and you cant remove the pump without taking the pulley off. The LS2 has spokes and you can get between them to remove the pump if necessary.

So I'm guessing I have to remove the pump to do this?

No, I just meant down the road if you do need to remove the pump then you can do it with the pulley on.

I replaced my power steering pump two weeks ago and I was not able to remove the stock pulley from the pump. When I tried, using the tool specified above, the flange that the tool locks into broke. Also not sure what has to be moved/removed to get enough room to do this with the pump still in the car. From what I have read here, most pull the pump to replace the pulley.
I would plan on this taking few hours either way. Just my 2cents.

I ran into the breaking flange on mine as well. I ended up breaking the whole pulley off in order to remove the pump. I took it to a machine shop who charged me $10 to remove the broken hub part. New pulley went on without a problem other than it takes a while to do it.

, Expect this to happen, if it comes off without breaking you are going to have a good day

one of those goofy 'pliable' funnels will work well if you need to remove the pump/bracket from the motor

Well it is already broken at the flange, the belt spins the pulley but it doesn't spin the shaft it's in such bad shape.

I rented a smaller pulley puller also just incase.

Having a quick look at it today I saw the EBCM was in the way, do I have to remove this damn thing too?! It's looking like it will be easier to remove the whole pump.

What will the funnel do?

In my case on my '99, I had to remove the EBTCM/BPMU as well. If you have to do that, I suggest getting some tiny corks which you can find at a hobby place. Its going to drip brake fluid so be careful you don't drip on the paint. Also, when you put it back in, you will have air in the lines and air in the BPMU. So, you'll have to bleed the brakes and actuate the BMPU in order to purge the air out of it. A tech 2 is needed to do this or my simple backyard mechanic way was to put the rear wheels in water and deliberately spin them. This will activate the AH system will activates the BPMU via the EBTCM its attached too.

re: EBCM, don't touch it

I removed the P/S pump/bracket many times on all years for head swaps/motor swaps etc.

pull the entire bracket with pump

.......Or, loosen x2(x4 13mm bolts 2000 and prior) and remove the LHS rack 18mm bolt, this will allow the bracket to move a fwd a bit if you have trouble

NOTE: 97/early 98 cars have the EBCM out back aft of the diff

Yep, that's how I did the second one. Much cleaner than removing the ABS pump.

For some reason, on mine, I didn't think I could get the bracket off with the pump. Maybe I missed something and made it worse for myself.

Overall a pretty easy task. Some of the bolts and lines are a pain to get to though.

Thanks for your help guys!
