Hello all. I purchased yesterday a 2002 corvette and this is my first post. I want to change the stock shifter for the c6 shifter. I bought one for $35 without the ****. Can anyone tell me if the stock c5 **** will fit? Also, is there a how to on changing this? I'm fairly mechanically inclined. Also, do i need any other parts, gaskets, shifter box etc etc? Thank you in advance for your help.
The C5 shift **** will not fit the C6 shifter. You will also need to modify the C5 shift boot to fit correctly. The C5 shifter uses a DEMOND KEY wedge to secure the **** to the shift rod. The C6 uses a set screw.
The C6 shifter will bolt right on your C5 shift box. Take special note of the two rubber bushings under the two bolts that secure the shifter box to the torque tube. They have a tendancy to deteroriate and effect shift quality. You cant buy them new from GM.
Recommend that you get a set of C5 service manuals or the service manuals on CD. You can find ALL the information that you need in those manuals.
DO NOT loose or damage that black plastic **** on the bottom of the shift rod. Thats another thing that you can NOT purchase seperately.
I use a KIRBAN Shifter because it has spring loaded shift rod centering springs. It also has shift stops which I set and utilize.
Make sure that you put the trans in nuteral and adjust the BOX so that the alignment pin slided into the alignment hole easily!
