I think there would be less upside to running 5-30 oil on the track at 300 degrees than it would using 15-50 for a few cold starts......wouldn't you?

I think 10W-40 would be the better choice. Cold start up wear, especially in my climate, would concern me if using 15W-50.

Your mornings in Long Island are not as cold as mine, but I still would have some concerns.

It seems a potential solution to the risks of lack of lubrication during startup would be an oil pan heater. That being said, it seems like a lot of work to be able to run the thicker oil.

Hell that is all I use.

In temps below 40 that oil just does not warm up enough ( above 180* ) Oil should get above 200-230 to really be beneficial.

Greg
greg is correct

For track use, 5-w30 is just too thin and does not take heat well.

that IS the reason for the 15-50 oil

Reading a recent thread by the OP it would appear that the goal is to reduce piston slap. Will thicker oil do that?

You beat me to this very good point. We have no idea why the OP would want to do it or his normal or expected usage for this car, and yet there are lots of opinions given on how good a plan this might be...

Thicker oil won't make any noticeable difference at all. Period!

Like I said in the other thread, the piston skirt area receives no pressurized lubrication. It only gets a very minimal amount of oil splash from the bottom end, not enough to have any effect on the slap.

No the OP dosen't think it would reduce piston slap the op was just curious. And wanted to see if the op could use a thicker oil during the summer months. And what oils other people were using.

Its only a Vette so you go down to 7-11 and buy whatever oil they have on sale and throw it in whatever weight it is. Dont ask on here or do a search cause 7-11 has been around a lot longer than most people on here and they know what they are selling...
