I just did this and noticed that there is really no way of keeping water out of there. The filter is pretty much sitting there waiting to get wet. My car does not have a seal at the fron of the hood. Should it? Or not? Has anybody ever had problems with this?
I ran the zip-tie mod for a short time and it never had an issue. If you are worried about it then you can just order a hood seal they are only $15 or so from most of the vendors here.
I only plan to do this for a short time too. Did you have the hood seal?

Mine has been done for at least 3 years now and no problems. I live in WA where it rains darn near 3/4 of the year. She has been my daily driver and has seen some very heavy rain fall on the freeway. I have a K&N filter that I keep oiled.
Nah I still don't have it with my blackwing and it's been fine. I have a few things to order in the next couple of weeks just waiting to have a big enough list so I can save on shipping lol. The hood seal is on the list as well as taillight seals bc that's the biggest pita in the world when theres water in the taillight housings adter washing the car. the trunk seals are nice too. All of this is only like $50 and a huge must for eliminating water problems. Just some food for thought!
So you're saying the stock air cleaner cover with 2 holes the size of a quarter is enough? I noticed a bit more pep when I did mine and it felt like it pulled harder at higher rpm's. Sounded better too.The stock covers for the early years were really restrictive. The link above shows an almost 16 hp gain and 11 lbs of torque. If you figure the cost vs benefit it's probably the best mod out there.
I've driven with it done for probably 5 years. And those that say it's a waste of time are morons. I've dyno'd immediately after and months after and still had gains. I've had it done on my current z for the last year and have put 25k on it.
So no issues with water? After trying to install my Vortex Rammer I am ready for something easier, I just got done taking it back off and hopefully can get the shop to straighten things back out. Would it be feasable to just cut the stock box open more keeping some of it in place but giving it a much larger opening?

You shouldn't do the zip tie mod with the stock paper filter. Really need a K&N or equivalent. They're mostly waterproof and much more durable.
Its popular on motorcycles to have an exposed K&N style filter for the air intake. They're oiled so water doesn't get it, and they're durable enough not to fall apart on the highway etc.
Is it possible to modify the stock air box to get a lot more air flow thru it? I am picking up my 2001 Z06 in less than two weeks and it is bone stock. I am sure I have an instant 15hp to open up with a cold air mod.

Not really on your car. You already will have the Zo6 airbox wich has an opening in the front to allow more air in. You would notice a gain with an aftermarket CAI though. Otherwise, I would leave it alone. Really nothing to gain by modifying your stock air box on a Zo6.
I ran the zip tie mod for months before I got my CAI...made a big improvement
be sure to disconnect the battery and then reconnect so the PCM relearns and adjusts the AF....after about a day of driving it settles in well for a noticeable seat-o-the pants improvement
at about 30 cents per HP (including a K&N) its hands down the easiest and cheapest HP gains for the money lol
all you need is $2 worth of ZipTies, K&N air filter, and no shame lol
there test is on a much smaller displacement engine and most importantly, no retune or PCM relearn was done. My car didn't feel much better until after a days worth of driving.
Also, its more a matter of increasing air flow through a bigger opening in the breather ;-)
more air in and more air out is never a bad thing for performance :-)
if your budget is only $50 or so, I say Zip Tie Mod away!
