Default TPMS - no Tire Training mode.

I'm pulling my hair out over this. Decided to replace my original 2004 C5 GY runflats with Michellins Pilots. At the same time I discovered all four pressure sensors were dead. So, had America's Tires install the Pilots and four new sensors.

Problem: AT says that the sensors talk to the handheld after mounting but they cannot get the DIC to display the Tire Training mode. It will go into FOB Training but when the Option button is pressed to get to Tire Training... NOTHING!

HELP!!!

Anybody ever heard of the BTM "forgetting" that it used to do tire pressure sensing? That's what seems to have happened.

I'm wondering how they are doing the check with the "handheld" as the sensors are dormant until the car reaches 20mph. You might ask the question. I know the system only transmits every 60 mins when dormant. Maybe it transmits when it's interrogated?

First thing to check is that you have the correct sensors. For an 04 you need the later (cheaper) sensors.

2001-2004 Sensors

25773946 - sensor
15234846 - nuts

If the problem is that the system will not beep - which initiates the training mode - you need a BIGGER magnet. If it beeps they must be doing something wrong on the buttons.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Programming

The Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system interfaces with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) through the serial data line. Once the program mode is accessed through the IPC, each sensor's unique identification code can be programmed into the receiver's memory. Each sensor must transmit the unique code in the proper sequence. A magnet must be held close to the sensor in order to force the sensor to transmit the identification code. The IPC will display a message as each sensor is programmed, and when to proceed to the next sensor for programming. The receiver also sends a message to the BCM to sound the horn one time, indicating that the sensor properly transmitted an identification code. If the programming sequence is cancelled before any sensor is programmed, or if the vehicle's battery is disconnected, the receiver will remember all current identification codes. As soon as the receiver learns the first sensor identification code, all previously stored codes are erased from the receiver's memory.
J 41760 Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Programming Tool.
Tool required (any medium strength magnet, U or Disk type
1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages.
3. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.
4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 seconds.
Notice: Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Cautions and Notices.
5. Press the OPTIONS button again until the TIRE TRAINING message appears.
6. Press the RESET button until the IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE message appears in order to begin
the programming sequence.
7. Install the J 41760 Tire Pressure Programming Tool over the left front valve stem.
8. The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed.
9. When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed
by the IPC messages:
- LEARN R FRONT TIRE
- LEARN R REAR TIRE
- LEARN L REAR TIRE
Programming Cancellation
1. The programming mode will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are met: - The program mode is exited through the DIC.
- The ignition is turned to OFF.
- All four sensors have been programmed.
- The TPM system has been in the program mode for longer than 2 minutes and no sensors
have been learned.
2. If the program mode is cancelled with less than four codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes programmed up to that point

I think what he is saying is that the option in the DIC to even program the sensors doesn't seem to exist..
Good thinking If the car has after market rims that might be a clue. If they are stock I can't see why anyone would program them out.

For the OP, if you fill out your profile and add a picture it helps to answer questions.

TPMS problem solved!!!

Went to a friend's shop who has a Tech 2 "like" unit and had him check the BMC option -- it had gone from "TPMS installed" to "TPMS not installed" (the vehicle is not a ZO6). This was really weird since TPMS had worked since I bought the car. He change the option to "installed" and BINGO, all sensors were recognized. Five minutes later we had them "trained" in proper order.

Following are the circumstances that led up to the BCM option "change":

1. I had to have a battery replaced late last year. I believe that the TPMS was working BEFORE the replacement, but not after.

2. I bought a trickle charger and began using it shortly after I replaced the battery. The charger has been used since the replacement battery was installed.

However, I am wondering if the following is actually what happened... and is it possible?

1. The sensors' batteries had died and were NOT working BEFORE I replaced the battery.
2. After replacing the battery and driving the car for some time, the BCM somehow realized that it was not sensing tire pressure. (I thought "TPMS installed" was the default setting.)
3. having a trickle charge going during BCM checks had something to do with the fact that the BCM reverted from TPMS installed to TPMS not installed -- and left it there. In other words, it changed the OPS option itself.

I know this sounds bizarre but how else could something like this have happened?

Glad you fixed it. Its a mystery but how often does your windows PC revert to a wrong setting even though you didn't change a parameter?

Who changed the battery? Maybe that person turned them off thinking they weren't installed???

Mods - I know I'm reviving an old thread, but just did the upgrade and wanted to share some of the issues I had.
TLDR: If you bought a 2001+ RFA module from Ebay, and it's not working right, it's probably from a Z06. To enable it with a scanner, make sure you're logging into it as a 2001 instead of your model year. Also make sure you look under chassis, and if you have to select chassis letter use the Y chassis. I used PN 10312535 from a Z06, an Autel DS708 scanner to enable TPMS, and Autel MX1 TPM sensors programmed by the shop.

I have a 1999 and wanted to do the upgrade when I had new tires put on. I got new fobs too, I'll throw an ebay link to them below. Nothing special, pretty sure they're all over this forum.
TPMS issues - I ordered a RFA module PN 10312535 from Ebay. The listing said Z06 - I now know that Z06's didn't have TPMS enabled. Installed the new module, programmed new fobs, thought I was good to go - didn't know the Z06 info yet. Took the car to a local high-end shop, explained to them the car is a 99 but the TPMS is a 2001 style system. They put in AutelMX1 TPM Sensors, programmed them to 315mhz, but couldn't get the car to show the TPMS program mode. They tried the onboard system, tried a few scantools, couldn't find it in the BCM, so they assumed the BCM may need to be flashed to a 2001. They ordered a license and all, but when I mention the car was tuned, they decided not to flash anything, and didn't charge me for the license. While that was going on, I was all over the forums trying to figure out why the TPMS learn mode wouldn't turn on and wouldn't show up in a scanner. Finally figured out the RFA module is separate and not under the BCM, AND I have a Z06 Module, so its 100% turned off and needs to be enabled. Explain it to the shop, they give it a shot, still can't find the RFA module - almost like it wasn't there, or wasn't powered on - but the key fobs were definitely working fine. They finished up and sent me home with no TPMS, but told me that if I somehow got it working, they would finish programming the TPMS free of charge.

Took it home, used my Autel DS708 scanner, punched in my VIN - scanner didn't like it. Made me use the manual settings. Put in GM, 1999, Passenger Car, Y chassis, Hatchback. Went to Chassis, found the RFA. Settings looked odd - it said I had 33 keys programmed. No on/off setting for the TPMS. So out of curiosity more than anything, I reset the scanner and selected GM, 2001, Passenger Car, Y chassis, Hatchback. Same thing - Chassis, RFA - but now I get a setting "Enable TPMS with *" and "Enable TPMS warning with *". Put the asterisk in each box, hit save, used the dash to pull up the TPMS Learn mode and there it was, good to go. Check the gauges tabs for Pressures, and they popped up blank, but enabled.

Took it back to the shop, explained to them how I did it, explained all they needed to do was use the dash and wake up the sensors with an Autel tool or similar. They initially tried a few high-end TPMS computers to set it and tried waking up the sensors by dropping 10psi, but in the end what worked was the Autel wake up tool. Took them about half an hour and finally got it all reading right.
