Default 2000 Fuel Leak Detection

I've smelled intermittent gas for a month or so now and I get a random P0440 code. The problem would never stay around long enough for me to be able to track down the source. Yesterday I finally was able to catch a wif from the passenger (right) fuel tank. I saw what looked like a stain coming from the top and possibly from the fuel pump seal. I removed it but in the process of getting it out I lost the trail of the leak. I can't see any noticable damage anywhere.

How would I go about testing the entire tank for leaks and pressure test it?

Are there any common failure areas I can try first?

How can I visually inspect the charcoal canister for leaks?

My problem was a failure of the FLVV in the right tank. I had more than a smell to go by though. I actually had liquid gas dripping from one of the vents connected to the carbon canister. Replaced the right tank and canister and so far so good. This is a link to my issue.

The usual cause of a leak is from the fuel filter itself. If you can get up in there, use your nose and of course your eyes as you've already done. The next usual cause is the fuel fill crossover tube, the large one, that fills both tanks. It can crack over time or twist and crack. Bill Curlee has an excellent picture of the entire system and a quick search would probably find it.
