Default 240 degrees too hot?

I have noticed my 2000 6-speed is always running at 237 to 240 degrees on the coolant temperature. This is true regardless of weather and is the same with the AC on and off. While the needle is not in the "red" zone... my gut tells me this is too hot. There is nothing blocking the air intake to the radiator.

Any thoughts? Is this a safe temperature for my C5?

If the gauge is correct, that's too high. Thermostat may be opening at too high a temp, or fans may not be coming on. When you turn on a/c, do both fans run?

Both fans are on regardless of the AC. I assume because it's running too hot. I have inspected (the best I can... it's tight quarters in there) the radiator and condensor and all looks clean and intact. I suppose I need to check the thermostat, the coolant condition, and for the presence of air.

Where is the thermostat located? I haven't messed with one of those since my Mustang days.

It's a 2000, toss the rad and buy a new one. After market is around $150.

Check to make sure there's no debris between the radiator and the ac condensor. If the fans are running it sounds like you're not getting enough air through.
Look up under the front behind the condensor. The outside that you can see from the front may be clean, but there's a V in there with space between the two that may have sucked up a bag, or leaves or grass, etc.

Here's a good DIY thread on cleaning the fins.

What temp are the fans coming on? Do they bring the temp down and cycle off? Since you say it always runs at 237-240 it is at that temp on the freeway where the fan are not needed. I would think since the radiator fins are clean it must be a bad thermostat or the radiator is getting plugged up and not flowing the coolant properly.

mine was always between 214-225 no matter what the outside temp was. no matter if i was on the freeway. would hit 235 all the time too.

change the thermostat. 20$ and 20min of your time.
