Default A/C compressor question

What would happen if I just took off the bolts off the bracket on the back of my AC compressor and replaced the gasket with a new one? Am I going to break anything or kill myself with pressurized fluids?

I know where my PAG oil leak is coming from, but I can't find any good newbie info about taking apart the AC system, so I was just going to start wrenching on stuff and see what happens.

My compressor should still be good to go, it hasn't had a clutch relay fuse installed since the oil leaked out...it should not have spun at all since then.

I just need a new gasket & a complete fill of oil. This will hopefully save me $1,000 out of pocket costs...am I making a mistake?

you need to see a pro. once you open the system air gets in and it must be evacuated.....
you may cause more damage. my 2 cents

I would get a new compressor. My guess is that when the oil ran out, the compressor was probably toast within a matter of seconds. If you run a piston pump for even 15 seconds unlubricated, it can be completely destroyed. The swash plate will be extremely scored in addition to the pistons and cylinders. you are taking a huge gamble reusing the compressor. also the accumulator needs to be replaced since atmospheric air was introduced to the system, and the whole system will need to be flushed.
