I bought my car already modded, but I know the heads on the car are the 241's. Just upgraded pushrods and springs I believe.
I was wondering what aftermarket performance heads are available for an ls1 that work well with a magic stick 3 cam? And what kind of dyno gains could I expect?
HP will all depend on your complete combo. Theres too many variables but for example, I have a ms3 with TFS 215cc heads milled for 12:1cr. Motor makes 600hp on an ethanol mix.
You could see gains as much as 75+hp depending on what you do and your supporting mods. Should flycut and mill the heads to run as much compression you can get away with. TrickFlow 215s when setup well make a lot of power, but require aftermarket rockers. The stock 241 heads are kind of the dogs of the LS head world. Worked 243 heads (LS6 & LS2)show more promise when ported by someone good like AI or TEA, But are only really worth it if you already have a set to port.
^^+1
Hard to beat TFS heads when it comes to making power with cathedral port heads. TFS heads, yella terra rockers and good double springs are hard combo to beat.
My 01 z with an ms3, stock 243 heads, 1 3/4 lg street lt, unported fast 90 intake/tb, vram made 418/383 sae. Went with a set of tea cnc ported tf 215 heads milled to 60cc. Did the trunion upgrade on the rockers so no aftermarket rockers. It did 448/400 on same dyno. Honestly I was expecting a little more out of it for the money I spent. I would recommend doing some worked on 243s used if you can find. Some say yella terras can add power so maybe if i had done that I would have seen more. That with some 1 7/8, 3 in. exhaust, elec.wp, speed density tune (no maf) and i could be at 470 which aint so bad.
i had tfs 215 cnc's, 1.75in long tubes, fast 90/92, vararam, hs rockers, xpipe and cat back WITH 4:10s and put down 478/425 to the wheels on a mn6 2003 base.
hard to beat the valve angle of the trick flows. makes it easier to not fly cut when you mill depending on the cam size.
I wouldnt recommend a speed density tune for a street car unless your having a difficult time tuning a maf. A maf is just more efficient. I thought about a speed density tune before but went with a LS7 style maf and a C6Z cai. Flows great and drives awesome for a big cam car on the street.
Sounds like ill need somewhere in 215 cncs for my setup. Don't have any 243s to play with, and im pretty sure my heads are probably ported already so im probably need to go with patriot or trick flow to make it worth my while. 20hp ain't work it, 50hp is
The MS3 cam from Texas Speed is 237/242, .603"/.609", 112lsa. It makes strong power from 3500-7000+ rpm. So you want heads that flow great and a valvetrain to handle the lift and rpms.

And which heads would those be? I see at least 3 options.
Cheapest is 5.3L heads
then worked ls6 heads
then some 215s I think, each costing more than the previous and having better airflow than the previous
Im thinking of doing the 243s now, for budget sake. I can probably get some used ones for $300....how much is getting it cnc,d cost at TEA? Figure cheaper than buying new.
Other questions:
1. Do I need to buy rockers as well to use the 243s?
2. Can I reuse the dual springs in my 241s?
FWIW, john from TSP recommended the 227 heads but at about $2200, plus dual springs and maybe rockers....and it adds way up

Why don't you contact TEA with these questions? I'm sure they'd be happy to help a prospective customer
